My girlfriend and I will be in Cathedral City from the 13th to 19th of May. Her parents have a house on a golf course there so we get to reap the benefits. Last time we were there we did the whole Disney Land tourist thing. Neither of us would like to do that again so I think we are going to rent a bike and just rip around. Maybe head over to huntington beach for a day or so.
Does any one have any suggestions of things we really should do or places we should visit?
I'd like to maybe try to surf. I can do it easily behind a boat so I might just rent a long board and wing it. Any suggestions here or locals that would like to throw a few tips my way? |

I would hit Venice beach for an afternoon. Definitely a fun, funky vibe going on there. Huntington Beach is really fun.
The farmer's market in LA is a blast.

Smoke crack in rialto
Keep your ears open for art walks, usually they are on thursdays.
Pasedena, riverside, and LA have some dope artwalks. You get music, art, and life in the city. _________________ Drink beer, soda rots your teeth and drugs rot your brain |

This is timely. We're doing a San Francisco -> Yosemite -> LA -> San Francisco (via Hwy 101) family vacation in June. We'll be in the LA area for 2-3 days. What are the beach suggestions? Keep in mind we'll have 3 kids with us between 10-15 years old.

HB is great...I was born and raised there....Plenty of beaches and huge surf shops. The pier is also cool to watch the locals surf (I don't recommend learning to surf there).
If you want to learn to surf/longboard, check out Doheny Beach (near Dana Point Harbor).
Newport Beach has better Restaurants and is great to visit as well. You can rent bikes in HB or Newport and bike between the two cities (it is a bit of ride though). |

| Fish6942 - If you are going to Yosemite, you should stop by Bass Lake (just 15 minutes from the main entrance to Yosemite). It is a really pretty lake (they filmed The Great Outdoors w/ John Candy there). |

It's a nice place to have breakfast or lunch and hang out for a few hours. I have been here..... Some great food, go hungry.......
Yosemite, check out Mono Lake. I have not been to either place yet, but I have seen some crazy photos from Mono Lake.
Can't forget Universal Studios if you are with the kids....... |

Go to San onofre state park and watch the pros surf trestles for a morning or afternoon. It's an awesome beach and your kids will love to watch the best surfers in the world destroying Trestles. If you want, rent a long board and a wetsuit and go down the beach a little to Uppers or Churches and let them learn how to surf.
If you surf huntington, just go down the beach off of the main peak and you won't get bothered at all. Taking a lesson would be pretty fun too. Huntington was named "surf city USA" so it is pretty much the epicenter but if you want more of a secluded beach then trestles at San onofre in Carlsbad is the way to go. It is a beautiful beach with green blue water and only 20-30 minutes depending on traffic from huntington. Also check out the surf hotel in huntington and maybe stay there for a night. Good rates and one of the coolest hotels ever. It's called the shore break hotel. Here is the link. http://www.shorebreakhotel.com/ _________________ Liquid Force

Mono Lake - yep, it's on the list
Bass Lake - Hmmm, we're doing some guided fishing in the area. I'll have to ask about that one.
Farmer's Market - Will check it out.
Sounds like Huntington Beach gets on the go to list as well.
Thanks All!

Just a couple points of note:
1) WATCH at Trestles, DO NOT attempt to learn or even paddle your beginner ass out there, you WILL at minimum get yelled at if not punches thrown in your direction. Uppers and Churches are less hairy than Lower Trestles, but on a good day I wouldn't bother trying to learn anywhere NEAR this spot. The walk down to the break is also pretty long (about a mile), maybe not ideal for a family.
2) San Onofre is a bit further north and much more beginner friendly, but also insanely crowded. You will likely find this to be a generally more family friendly environment than Trestles though. Justin's suggestion of Doheny is also good (although I think the waves tend to be more fickle than San O, if I'm not mistaken).
3) Carlsbad is technically part of San Diego county, Trestles and San Onofre are in San Clemente/San Juan Capistrano area (about an hour north of Carlsbad) and a bit of a drive from Huntington (not long distance, just SLOW).
4) So Cal traffic on the weekend is an abomination and may cause red-zone berzerker rage. Beach parking will cause equivalent if not more severe gut-twisting fury.
5) DAMN, I just looked up Cathedral City, you're out in the boonies. No wonder you wanna go to Huntington! Ha ha! According to Google maps, 2 hr drive without traffic, 4 hrs with. Sounds about right. Plan carefully! |

As a side note regarding traffic:
I work in Carlsbad, but live in Orange County, so I drive the 5 Freeway everyday. There is almost no traffic on the morning from OSO Parkway (where I get on the 5 Freeway) heading south to Palomar Airport Road (where I get off). The traffic starts to back up just past Palomar Airport road.
Coming North in the Morning or South in the evening sucks. Traffic is always bad. Never head south on the 5 on a Friday!!! Pure traffic hell...
Also, it is takes 35-40 minutes from Mission Viejo to Carlsbad on the 5 Fwy (with no traffic). |

Doheny is a good beginner/family place. A lot of cool things going on in the area, but still less crowded than San Onofre (at least rage inducing parking lot experience wise). The waves were pretty good when I surfed it, but it was also during a swell. I'm in the area a lot though, and there's always surfers in the water, so it must be ok more often than not.
But if it's rained anytime in the last millenia, I'd steer clear. I had an bacterial infection that I couldn't shake for over 2 months that kicked in a day after surfing Doheny. Maybe coincidence, but I doubt it. You want to avoid all SoCal water for a couple days after a rain, but I'd avoid Doheny for at least 3 weeks after precipitation. The poo factor is high. _________________ "I'm scared if I stop drinking all at once, the cumulative hangover will literally kill me." |

JV, sheot....you pretty much want to avoid the water at break near a populated area or river mouth after a good rain in this damn state.
there is a 72 hr. poo warning going on up here in Santa Cruz right now too.
gotta deal with the bacteria if you want the good waves though, I guess. |

No JV, not a coincidence. The rule is 72 hours after a rain you don't go in (usually they say this on the news after a rain). Lengths can change, depending on population or proximity to a major road. So Ponto or Tamarack I'd give just a bit longer, Grandview or Beacons you may be able to shave a day off.
Ha ha! Only takes getting sick like that once and you'll NEVER do that again, eh? I got that outta my system RIGHT QUICK. |
