What is the city deficit in Dallas right now? Last I heard they were getting closer and firing 500 city employees. I think they started at 130 million in deficit.

Nor*Cal, yeah, the city of Dallas is horribly mismanaged. I'm not sure what the deficit is. Most people who claim Dallas don't actually live in Dallas. You'd have to look at Richardson, Plano, Allen, McKinney, Frisco, Southlake, Arlington, Irving, The colony, Lewisville. That doesn't even get you to Ft Worth. DFW is one big glob of business and residential.

Watch this show on natgeo called "How the earth changed history, beneath the crust."
In this episode, fault lines are discussed and Stewart explains that throughout history people have built cities on or next to major fault lines. These fault lines have affected the geography of the planet as well as our history. He tells the reasons fault lines have been important to civilizations for centuries.
The last part is on the LA/San Andreas fault area. Very enlightening.

Wakebrad, my point was to simply counter the initial statement that created this thread. Mismanaged governments are all over the country. California has some big changes ahead as the citizens have proposed and passed several new statutes to reform government: Citizen Redistricting and Open Primaries. Years ago CA had a more stable budget (though it is always a battle, just the nature of our parties in this state) but then we elected to have term limits. Term limits have ruined the stability of the political structure and created an arena of constantly revolving candidates who are always running for the next office. I honestly believe CA wouldn't be struggling as much if term limits didn't exist. Having budgets negotiated by people who need to run for a new office all the time just wedges the parties and prevents compromise. That being said open primaries and districts that are not safe to either party will create an environment of compromise that I think is suited to getting this state back on track... And until then we will continue to produce the most patents and innovate for the rest of the country while everyone else manufactures. I'm hoping to foster a tax and regulatory structure to get CA back into high-tech manufacturing, just something I get paid to do and would love to personally see happen.
8824, I think plate tectonics is less of a concern for Californians than Nor'easters, hurricanes or tornadoes are to the rest of the country.

jt09, even if you cut those numbers in half, it still looks pretty good. I don't know if the good in Texas during Perry's tenure is because of him, in spite of him, or neither, but I don't see how anyone can campaign against him based on the State economy. (That's right, I capitalized "State" because it refers to Texas.)

I view the pie chart as being misleading because it is Texas up against the Dakotas, Wyoming, etc., and I am assuming it is based upon number of jobs created in the state... so obviously the state with the largest population will have the largest cut of the pie.
The second chart... for now I have nothing, that is impressive

Faust, the pie is all states with job growth. You can't put negative values on a pie chart.

some of y'all need to learn how to read a chart. there's nothing misleading whatsoever about it. it's total numbers, not % or % based on population.
there's no correlation to state size at all. no florida, cali or ny on there. hell, it doesn't look like there's any of the top 20-25 most populous states there except texas.

Again, you can't put negative numbers on a pie chart. According to the chart, those are the only states in the country with positive job growth. What is so difficult to understand?

Faust, the pie chart perfectly answers the question "where are private jobs going?" If you want an answer to a different question you can use a different chart/graph. But there is nothing misleading about that graph. Per-capita or % growth is asking a different question. A rather irrelevant question I think, but a different question.
This is actually a great example of what will happen the more we go to a tax and spend economy as a country. Business is going to flood to places with the most open market. Texas is successful because the market is more open here than it is anywhere else in the country. That includes regulation, taxes, etc.
This is the reason Lib states are F'ed right now and will only continue to get worse. The farther we push the government in this direction the more the country is F'ed. This will be the first time I vote straight ticket R. A message needs to be sent.

I'll agree with above just with my micro-view of Texas a lot of construction is really getting ramped up right now. Just this week I had 3 proposals signed that will total how much I did in the 6 months prior and I hired a new guy last Friday

I hate to bring politics into this, and I don't like any politics whatsoever... but I will agree there is a very strong correlation (when it comes to employment) between republican states doing 'well', and democrat states doing 'poorly'.

It's not difficult to understand, it's misleading.
Let's say Texas added 79000 new jobs and utah added 5000 new jobs. (79% and 5% of that graph). Lets say both at 10% unemployment before these new added jobs.
Texas population = 24.8M; 22.32M employed
Utah population = 2.8M; 2.52M employed
Texas % increase = 0.354%
Utah % increase = 0.198%
Texas still grew quicker, but not at the rate that the graph implies.

The graph is not measuring "Rate." It is a measure of total jobs. Growth does not assume % Growth. There is numerical growth and percentage. So while this is a pie chart which is inherently in percentages, it does not mean growth as a percentage of each state's population nor does it state as much. The fact that it is a pie chart means that it is a percentage of a whole and wouldn't make sense if you're considering growth rate as a percentage of the individual state.

Its not really rocket science. Its cheaper for companies to house work in TX. Many big businesses are flocking to North Texas and setting up shop. Early adopters have known for some time that technology has made the old geograhical rules of thumb obsolete.
Everyone is now starting to catch on. ESPN does alot of there creative footage here. They literally fly the crews and their gear from CT to a studio in Dallas where they film this stuff. They use hands here locally to produce much of the work. No unions no drama.
Tons of companies from both coasts are doing the same thing. I believe there are 3 or 4 TV shows doing there filming in Dallas alone. This is traditionally ALWAYS done on the coasts.

+1 for Texas
SunPower's U.S. Growth Continues With New Expansion Office in Austin, Tex.
450 Jobs Created Over the Next Four Years
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 23, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWRA, SPWRB), a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, solar panels and solar systems, today announced that the company has received a $2.5 million investment from the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) to expand operations with a major new office site in the Austin, Tex. metropolitan area. SunPower plans to create 450 jobs in the region over the next four years with this investment, which is conditioned upon the finalization of a local incentive agreement with the City of Austin.
"We applaud Gov. Perry, Mayor Leffingwell and state and city officials who are aggressively working to offer SunPower economic incentives to expand our operations to Austin and create hundreds of jobs," said SunPower CEO Tom Werner. "Texas has great potential to become a significant solar market. If policies creating a stable solar market across Texas are enacted, this commitment by SunPower could be the start of significantly more investment and job creation in the state by the rapidly growing solar industry."
State-level and Austin area officials successfully competed with other jurisdictions that SunPower considered for its North America expansion. In addition to the solar market potential in Texas and development incentives offered by the state and city, SunPower cited Austin's talented workforce, semiconductor industry expertise and a neighborhood of strong academic institutions as factors that influenced the selection.
A global company, SunPower employs approximately 5,500 people with more than 900 in the U.S. With this investment, Texas will become one of SunPower's top three office locations in the U.S. The Austin facility will house operations including marketing, legal and finance functions.
About SunPower

Yes, we've had very strong growth this decade and are looking to expand. The Austin market presents a great opportunity for us and we can continue to seek growth in the TX market. Placing jobs in the state is a great way to start in the heart of oil country.
