If I had the technology and funding to design a wakeboarding game, I think I would make it somewhat like this:
A story line based game with two paths, either a well respected free rider or a contest rider. You start the game off just riding on a cable or something and if you do well you get noticed by some board sponsor or something. And that's when you choose your path in the game.
From there on out if you choose to contest ride it would go into picking which lake you want to move to. And maybe you move in with other riders and that could play into the story line. In this route you would probably just live in Florida.
If you chose to freeride you would have options of where to live and ride, like the california delta, washington state, mid west or florida. This would be a little more tricky to put a good story line into but maybe the same type of thing, house with different riders and whatnot.
Depending on what route you choose would affect what sponsors you get. Like if you were a freerider doing video parts and what not you would be much more likely to get offers from slingshot and local board shops. A contest rider would obviously have all the sponsors thrown at them from a board company to a boat company and all the bells and whistles.
I would add in parts with like shooting video sections and magazine adds and cover shots for sponsors. You would be more likely to be in these as a free rider. But a contest rider would still get cover shots.
Throughout the game you would come across times where you could take what you have earned and change your career path to the one you didn't choose.
A freerider would most likely not get a boat hook up right away so they would have to pay for gas and stuff. You would accumulate cash from sponsors and from objectives and tricks while riding. Eventually as you did enough videos and magazine stuff you would get your boat hook up. But as a contest rider it would be much easier to get a boat hook up.
Another idea I would have would be real life environments effecting riding. So the game would have a night morning and afternoon. At night the boat would turn lights on and the wake would be less visible making it a little more difficult to ride, but video and magazine payouts would be higher at this time due to increased difficulty. Everything would be easier in the morning and payouts would be less because the water would be in better shape.
It would be cool to take all the shots you do for one video and put the into a highlight reel and let the user upload music into the reel and save it.
I would integrate double ups, plenty of rails, a build your own park type deal and towable rails.
Sponsors would also include board shorts, vests, ropes, handles, clothing and what not. _________________

ya it would be somewhat like skate, i've never played stoked though.
just more of a "real" game. nothing with 8 foot tall wakes and nose-pressing a flaming rail with stars and power boosts on it.
I would want my game to be like putting real wakeboarding in your hands, and not some fantasy land wakeboarding. that is what was so cool about skate is that you felt like you were really skating. and if you can add in a real life atmosphere in the story line to go with it, i think it would be a way better game then most games out there.
What would be really cool is to put a helmet cam on a rider and come up with a way to do motion capture on the water. Then use these to have a first person view of the riding. _________________

Ive always thought you could make a totally sick wakeboard game but I guess there just isnt a market. Some of my ideas:
-Put real lakes in as riding options (Lake Powell, OWC, The Delta, Carlsbad Lagoon, Radar Lake, CWC, Lake Allatoona, The Projects, etc) then have a map of the place come up and you draw a path of where you want the boat to go and where to place a photographer so you can hit the rails, natural features (rocks, docks, seawalls), and dumper/double ups/triple ups that you want to.
-Make your own slider feature (especially awesome for a cable park level...create a park would be cool but not really necessary if you could just build new rails at O dub)
-Incorporate realistic tricks (900s are actually hard, double flips only possible off double up) and include off axis and ole spinning
-Have options for boat speed to affect wake shape
-Have different weather conditions (glass, or vibration/difficulty cutting for chop) and rain or cloud cover. Having a glare on the wake at sunset would really go the extra mile.
-Make different boards actually ride different, cut speed for standard non flex fin board and best pop, then have a roam like board with little pop and totally slippery to ride around and be able to press (unlike the stiff boards)
-Make it so that you have to spray sliders or else the controller vibrates when you slide it |
