Aubs, I went there for a weekend getaway while living in Italy. We went to the Cairo area and checked out the pyramids, Sphynx, etc. It was one of our favorite trips. You going?

| Nor*Cal, those things are sketchy to get on too.. they lay down so you can get on. When they stand up, they stand up with their back legs first, so it feels like you are going to indo off the front. We were racing them which was pretty fun.. When you get them trotting, they motor pretty good.

True. I assume that when someone asks something, there is a reason.
I wouldn't start a thread titled Ford Bronco and ask if anyone has a Ford Bronco without myself thinking "I want a Ford Bronco", or "my friend has a Ford Bronco and this happened" or "*insert news site here* said this about Ford Bronco's."

| Zach M, ya, but she could be asking about places to see, the easiest way to get there, if the water was drinkable, if the food was good, if it was safe, climate information, local transportation options, ...................................................................................................................................................................

oh, and as far as your Ford Bronco analogy is concerned...
If someone asked if anyone had a Ford Bronco, I wouldn't know whether or not they were looking to buy one, had transmision problems, wanted to know what rims fit it, wanted to know if it was a double DIM deck, if the top was removable, what size engine it had,....

True. But you would also respond with your first thoughts toward the subject. "I had a Ford Bronco and it was always in the shop", or "I love my Ford Bronco, best truck I've ever owned", or "watch out for the Bronco's between 1970-76, they had engine problems".
Notice how whenever someone posts something, people always feels the need to chime in on anything personal that happened with the particular subject? You don't always get the specific info you're looking for. That said, I'll wait to hear what she's actually interested in

Thanks for the help/advice/asking friends/etc... it really is much appreciated.
Looking into doing a summer program with Brown/Chicago for summer 2011. Might change my field of study to Egyptology too after I finish this masters. Once again, just thoughts being thrown around right now. But the professor I've been working with does American Studies, Archeology, and Egyptian Studies - and spent years getting degrees at Brown and has great connections there. Really don't wanna go back to the Northeast, but we'll see where things go.
Thinking about planning a trip there in August for a week. Need to see if this is even a feasible option for me. They hate female professors/researchers in Egypt, so its not the easiest thing to get into...

| You must be going to school on mom/dad's dime if you are thinking about going into Egyptology.. WTF are you going to do w/ that, Indian Jones? You also seem to be a professional student.

dbis - Nope, its a she. And SHE is deffffffff not my type.
churchy - False. As long as you teach for the university while you take classes, its paid for. I can get a second masters / phd in teaching so I'm more diverse for perspective universities to hire me. Egyptology is a much sought after program, but there are few people in the US qualified to do it. Even if I just get a masters in it, but go back to US for my phd, or go into Archeology for my phd, its just another thing that I could possibly teach.

I dont understand how a PHd in Egyptology will make you more diverse, but who am I. Seems like you should do some good thinking. From an outsider it seems like you will be racking up a lot of dollars in student loans and persuing a competitive field with low pay. And with the more years you are in school there are less years to work and pay off those loans.
There is also something to be said about the fear of entering the real world.

Broccoli - Right now, the plan is to get my phd in American Studies. But if a school is willing to pay for me to get an extra masters for 2 years before entering a phd program, I'm okay with that. The entire time I'm in school, I am building up more experience teaching at a college level, and the more time I'm in school, the wider the range of classes I will be teaching. I'm fairly young to be entering a phd program, so I really don't think I'm "avoiding the real world" like you claim.
goofy - Some small ones to cover part of my living expenses, but after this semester ends, I'll be finding a part time time to cover it all for next year. I also have no loans from undergrad either.

| PS. Visiting Egypt is awesome, and comes highly recommended. However, living there would be pretty rough. Better get used to wiping your ass with your hand. I even saw a poo hand print on the bathroom wall in one of the stores we were in.

So what you're saying is that it is pretty much like visiting Canada?

your going to school to be an archeologist? Sounds kind of cool, my question is how long, if ever do you make enough money to pay your school fees? Not sure I've known anyone that actually became what they said they would be when they were 9 years old. My policeman or pro hockey player dream never really worked out...

| No. Professor. The summer program would give me some out of the country experience as well as *hopefully* make some connections with people at Brown.

Driving in Cairo is the craziest thing I have ever seen. I thought Rome was bad, but it isn't even close. 17 million people in that city so there are many lanes each direction... all hauling ass with their lights off (at night.. not sure why). Either there are no real traffic laws, or no one pays attention to them. People are trying to cross through this mess like Frogger. I am talking moms holding babies standing on one of the lane lines with cars going like 80 on each side of them. People get run over left and right.
If the traffic doesn't kill you, there is a high probability that the food will... The farmers were washing all of their fruits and vegies in these amazingly dirty canals with people pissing in them just upstream.
