|

Hey,
I have a automatic '99 Mercury Cougar. Last night I came back to school, driving over 300 miles. I attempted to go to work today and my car is jolting and will not accelerate uphill.
I live up north and it is pretty cold right now. When I push down the pedal the rpms go up but I roll back down the hill. Is it not getting into gear?
The car drove fine last night. I have no knowledge of cars and little money, so I do not want to get screwed over at the mechanics.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Nash

sounds like your transmission is shot...check your fluids first, sometimes a flush will fix your problem but it is only a temporary _________________

Let the car warm up for 20 minutes or so, then try it again. _________________ Brent B

| Yep, sounds like the trans to me too. Let the car warm up and then check the fluid level. You might have blown a line off of it, if that is the case and you didn't run it too far like that you might get away with fixing the line and filling the fluid. If it has fluid your trans is shot. |

The verdict is... low fluid... hopefully.
Warmed the car up and waited a little while. Checked the fluid and it was about a quart low. Drove it and it runs fine now. Cars are a money pit, id rather have a boat.
Everyone, thanks for the quick insight!

scooter, So you never heard the saying about boats? "They are just a whole in the water in which to throw money." _________________ Brent B

Broccoli B, I know boats can be even bigger money pits but at least I get to enjoy myself when I use it.

Hey man there's gotta be a reason the fluid is low. Get that tranny system checked out. The pan gasket could be seeping, cooler lines leaking, etc. You don't want to be messing around with your transmission running low. Never mind in the winter when the temperature makes everything you do that much harder on the vehicle. _________________ Isaiah 43:2 --> When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
