I have a chance to go to St. Martin on 1/22, but my passport expired about 10 years a go. I've looked at Dept of State website, and it says you can get one in 2-3 weeks(cutting it too close) and if you want within 14 days you must go to a passport office, (nearest one to me is over 2 hours away; There are other websites that promise one in 24 hours or other time periods less than 2 weeks. Anyone have any experience with this or any recommendations?

I got mine several years ago. I think they offered expedited service for an extra fee. I remember not paying extra and still getting my passport in the expedited time frame. I've also heard stories of people paying for expedited service and not getting their passport in the expedited time frame. Sounds to me like every case is different.

If I were you, I would go with one of the websites that promise within the time frame that you need it. Just google the website name to see if you can find reviews of the website's service.

two hours is not a long drive. call the office. make an appointment. go get your passport. why would you risk not getting to go on the trip just so you can save 5 hours?

also, don't type expediated again. people will laugh at you.

there should be a company in town that will do this for you for a fee. we got my daughter and babymomma passports in under 2 weeks. no idea what they charged. well worth it - they know every document you need, what needs to go on what line, etc. they fill everything out, you simply sign at the x. well worth it, imo.

generally passports seem to be processed pretty fast right now ( http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/processing/processing_1740.html ), but certainly don't gaurentee that you will get it in time. The best bet is using a service, or driving the two hours to the passport office. The expeditors can generally get you a passport in as little as 24 hours, but it comes at a cost. A reputable service should be able to get your passport to you well before your trip.
