hmm.

Quote:
A top US commander is threatening soldiers who fall pregnant on active service with jail.

Under the new policy, troops expecting a baby face court martial and a possible prison term – and so do the men who made them pregnant.

And the rule applies to married couples at war together, who are expected to make sure their love lives do not interfere with duty.

Usual US Army policy is to send pregnant soldiers home from combat zones within 14 days.

But Major General Anthony Cucolo, who runs US operations in northern Iraq, issued the new orders because he said he was losing too many women with critical skills.

He needed the threat of court martial and jail time as an extra deterrent, he said.

It appears the military is completely full...With policies like these its obvious that they dont need to keep or recruit people...

I've heard a lot of accounts where female enlisted soldiers are getting out of going over to the great big sandbox by getting pregnant.

Sounds about right to me - you join the military - you give up all your rights for the next 4 years now deal with it!!!

Classic!!! The militaries true colors are shining through!

Why not let them have the kid and just hold it hostage until both parents serve the full 4 years.
If they both die the military gets to keep your child and raise it to be a bar coded assassin. win win for everyone!!! LOL..

Honestly they should have thought of this before they let woman serve side by side with men.

Is the US Military indicating they are having a hard time filling positions???
Where are all the good little Patriots lining up to get in??? Well run dry?LOL....

Though about what? I wouldn't think you would be bumping uglies in a combat zone.

However over the top this may be.... women who are taking our money for their salaries are backing out of their commitment by getting pregnant and obviously this must be happening on a rather large scale for the officials to react this way.

Then we get to pay their military benefits to stay at home and watch their child while they haven't fullfilled their duties.

I don't knwo where to stand on this. I see the military's side in someway, but then I think its ridiculous to imprision someone for getting pregnant.

I guess its one thign to threaten, and another if they actually start making them serve jail time. They may just get dishonerably discharged and forgo the benifits... but jail time is a bit dumb IMO.

Is it illegal for a male in the military to willfully acquire a medical condition that would remove him from combat?

Yes.

Why should it be different for women?

I've been having sex probably 3x a week for 18 years. (average, dry spells and torrential floods taken into account) and I only got one woman pregnant, and it was on purpose. Go figure.

^ bingo, you can't shoot yourself in the foot to get out of duty. You sure as hell shouldn't be able to let someone shoot you in the ovaries to get out.

no problem, lamb.

1st, you really think this new source is accurate? the world news is a good source for accurate reporting of us army regulations and how they are handled? you are a moron if you do. if you are cb, you are simply trolling for responses because you are bored.

2nd, a major general in command of an infantry division can't put anyone in jail, much less dictate military policy. there is due process in the military and no one is getting arrested for getting pregnant w/o half the nation giving their $0.02 before it happens.

3rd, w/ just some minimal googling and a tiny bit of common sense/knowledge of how the us military works, you would know that this is going to get killed from above w/i a week.

Quote:
Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo insisted that those who violate the new rule would not face court martial, even though his new order lists pregnancy under a section of violations punishable by prosecution. So far, the punishments have been in the form of written letters of reprimand.

Quote:
The pregnancy policy is just one provision in a larger general order that also prohibits soldiers from sexual contact with Iraqis or third-party nationals who are not members of coalition forces.

Provisions in the Nov. 4 order are also applicable to civilians under Cucolo's command.

as i scroll through this thread, i not only see no one who has served in the military (that i recognize), but no one who has been close enough to understand what is happening, or what will happen, in this case. not unlike what i see in most posts about the military here on wb.com.

Here's CNN's version of the story

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/12/21/iraq.us.soldiers.pregnancy/

Quote:
The rule, enacted November 4, was first reported by Stars and Stripes, a military-focused publication.

Is stars and stripes qualified to report on military regulations and how they are handled?
http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=66764

USA today:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2009-12-18-pregnant-soldiers_N.htm?imw=Y&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Usatoday-MostViewedArticles+%28USATODAY.com%3A+Most+Popular%29

IT takes a whole lot of stupid to do a google search for this topic and NOT find the original stars and stripes article. apparently, according to STars and Stripes, a major general in command of an infantry division can put someone in jail, and dictate military policy for personnel under his comand.

As a Former Marine, I've seen women get pregnant to avoid deployment. I watched my friend go from being scheduled to deploy 6 months down the line to leaving in 2 days. JT they very well can and should punish the women whom get pregnant to avoid or during deployment. Our standing orders while deployed were ZERO SEXUAL CONTACT. It costs alot of money to send one person home because they got pregnant, and bring out a replacement. Its even worse when you are a mission critical job with very little personel in your specialty. If they want to jail them thats fine with me, restriction seems like a better option, but I'm not the General or the person that will deal with their NJP. Either way they shouldn't just get to go back home or stay home with no punishment what so ever since what they're doing is counter to the mission and their unit.

For what its worth, No military personnel will wind up in jail unless convicted by a court marshall. Without courtmarshall, I believe, off the top of my head, the highest penalty one could get in the Marine Corps would is 90 days restriction to barracks and loss of 1/2 each months pay for the same time length.

Hell its only six-eighteen months, do the time then get pregnant right when you get back if you want a kid that bad, but getting pregnant to avoid/leave early a deployment is not the reason to be bringing a kid into this world anywas.

Just my .02

The idea that the government can tell people what they can and cant do with their twigs and berries just doesnt sit right...I guess thats one of many reasons why Im not in the military...

Former Army National Guard... my comment above was based on talking with old contacts over the last few months that are still at my old unit and with others I met during my time in service.

JT... I compare this to the gay and lesbian enlistees who all of the sudden came out of the closet when the first Gulf war came around. It only came out when they wanted to stay state side and not get deployed. It unfortunately resulted in the Don't Tell Don't Ask laws currently in use. The females in today's military have found a loop hole for this conflict/war like the gays found during the last major conflict.

Side note... it is extremely funny (at least for me) to see all the college kids who signed up for the "free" education through the Reserve and Guard whining about getting deployed. "My recruiter told me my unit would never get deployed! I don't want to go to (insert country)!" I find it really funny that none of these people ever thought that being in the military could result in fighting overseas. I was lucky and missed getting deployed by six months because my service obligations were done. I thought really long and hard about re-enlisting but decided I had had enough of the military and it was time to exit stage left.

ah ha! finally someone who understands a little bit.

getting punished is one thing, being court marshalled and going to jail is quite another. the army isn't going to put women in jail for getting pregnant. it's that simple. use your freaking heads. just because you think the military is the ultimate evil run by right wing fascists, doesn't make it true.

putting women in jail for getting pregnant. just think about that for 2 seconds. think about how terrible that is, and how badly that would backfire on the military. think about who our president is.

I also agree with jt09 that no pregnant women are going to jail. But I do agree there should be punishment as this is clearly abusing the ability to get pregnant and a severe infraction of the rules that the soldier AGREED to.
