got an 82 mc dd.

the rudder comes through the hull way at the back (under the gas tank). There appears to be a nut that looks exactly like my packing nut on my prop shaft, and this nut is leaking a fairly steady (although small) stream of water.

is there packing inside? should it drip like a packing nut on the propshaft? do I just like saying packing nut?

thanks

I just got through pulling my rudder off of a 2001 mobius v. It did not have a packing nut, but instead it had a cotter pin and a bolt that went through the shaft. When I pulled the rudder off, I noticed a lot of white sealer kind of like a liquid gasket or caulking. I have ordered a new rudder and when I pick it up from the dealer I am going to purchase a tube of that sealer. I bet you will need to pull your rudder and add some silicone or marine sealer. When you pull the rudder, do not hit the shaft with anything! I did and it burred the brass. It is hell getting off, after you do that. I had to sand the shaft in a very tight location to get it off. I hope that this helps. Also, Sanding your shaft is more fun to say than Packing your nut.
