I want to add in Dash Navigation to my 2006 Ford F150, it has the larger sized opening in the dash like the picture. I am looking for a unit that has a large screen, can play DVD's and has a ipod hookup. Also I would like to get a model that is maybe a few years old to save some $$$. Anyone have any unit suggestions, or sites to buy from?

| I know its outdated but I still love my Pioneer Avic D3. I think you can still get them some places. Easy to mod too. |

| Most of our F150 work trucks have the Alpine displays installed in them for our Qualcomm gear. Alpine seems to have the nicest/cheapest non-flip-out display and they fit perfectly in the existing opening in the new Ford half-tons. |

Please don't buy anything from those crooks. They're not a dealer for anything they sell, and most equipment is shipped out without serial numbers. That means that if (and it's very possible because I know of an instance that it happened) a product arrives and it's dead, even though it's new, it'll take 5-6 weeks to get it back from them, and it's repaired. That means you bought a new amp/headunit/speaker from them that was dead on arrival, and they sent it off to be repaired. After being re-serialized, that is.
I mentioned a story on gmfullsize.com about them in 07, and one of the employee's joined/posted, then started fighting and namecalling on there. The replies from this employee were ridiculous. I can give a link to the thread to back this up if needed.
For a head unit, the D3 is okay, at best. Alpine holds the torch on double-din head units with nav right now, but they're mostly priced about twice as much as the competition. I sell Pioneer and Clarion at my shop and Pioneer right now has about the best unit on the market being sold new for it's price point. The new AVH-P series smokes the previous F and D series. Most importantly though, stay far far away from the Z series with internal hard drives. I've got several customers with those and the head unit was freezing up on them when it was hot outside. Pioneer never would replace them, I had to send them back 3 times before they'd do anything. |

jonyb, Just a quick note about the z-series. Do you know if this was a specific run of them that was fixed later? Although I've heard of freezes, I've had one for a couple of years living in florida and not once has it locked up on me.
Also, Pioneer has released a firmware upgrade for free on their site that fixes the problem. |

| Firmware didn't fix teh first problems, hard drive replacements did. At least when my customer was having the problem there wasn't any firmware, and this went on for a year and a half. The Z series is obsolete now, so it doesn't really matter. I'm just saying if you're buying used to save money, don't buy that piece of junk. |

We have the D3 in the Jetta.
When it was new, it was a really slick unit.
The stuff out right now blows it away though. The D3 is also a DVD based map unit, which makes it a little on the antique side.
I like Kenwood's line as it uses Garmin's interface. My SIL has one in their C-class and it is a lot nicer to work with.
That said, the D3 just works, and honestly it works pretty well. Albeit outdated. _________________
