I'm not really sure if this threads been made before, so if it has I'm sorry.

I was thinking about the physics behind wakeboarding (Newton's laws especially) and I think a deeper understanding of physics, which is essentially the way the world works, can definatly help you progress faster and build good habits. The most obvious one is definatly Newton's 3rd law, For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, the main example being the leaning back with your knees bent in the seated position to "load the line". I feel my knowlege of physics (which isn't a whole lot) helped me better my progressive edge, which in turn, helped my wake jumps drasticly.

By no means am I a qualified phisicist, but I love physics for sure. The point of this thread was to see if anyone else with greater knowlege of physics can help me get a new perspective on some things in the water. I'd like to know more about the physics of inverts/spins on and off axis. Anyone got anything for me? Smile

Physics taught me that if you want to be good at wakeboarding you need an x-star

No, i am actually serieus Laughing Anyway, a boat it is...

Well, boats are expensive, how much does the x star cost, like $50 000? For that i can take yearcards at 5 different cableparks for 20 years...

Are you serious? Laughing

X-80's (not x-100) have a base MSRP around $130,000. Of course their 'options' are things like kitchen appliances and whatnot.

Loaded X-Stars have MSRP's into the 100k's, likewise with X-45s.

Don't know why I felt like ensuring you knew this was important, but now you know Wink

Embarassed WilsonH, i dont think anyone here is a phicisist thats why it went offtopic. but like you i find it interesting.. i only have about the same knowledge as you in terms of the line and newtons laws

Very Happy

Okay, physics!

Speaking only of the three laws, I believe your example falls into all three categories.

Being pulled by a boat is an external force therefore when you edge there is a change in linear momentum and one's particular placement will consistently be changing in comparison to its arbitrary reference point undergoing force in the opposite direction. 1, 2 and 3!

Due to the application and the broad categorization of the laws, I would dare to say due to the application it would be difficult to narrow any movement while being pulled behind a boat to a single law.

I was positive someone would have posted Olivia Newton John by now.

There we go! Very Happy

You're definatly right about the 3 laws.. I'm guessing my search for an expert to explain spins and inverts is probably a little hopeless Laughing . Worth a try.

I'm just talking out my @$$ anyways Laughing

f=d(mv)/dt would be Wilson's starting point. Time, velocity vector, mass and force vector are his variables. Point A to point B, your initial point and terminal point, yada yada yada.

WilsonH, you would love Kyle Schmidt's classroom session here at The Wakeboard Camp. He focuses on the physics behind getting bigger air and working with the boat, rope, water, and board to get all you can out of riding. It all becomes so much clearer after hearing and seeing it all laid out.

We have a lot of things going for us that other board sports don't have. Our ramp (the wake) isn't a solid object, we can take advantage of that. There is a lot you can do with a little bit of leverage, like the progressive edge you mentioned.

Anyway, it's good stuff. Also, Kyle gets on Stokemeter.com once a month, and you can get a bit of a taste of how he instructs on those. Rock n roll!

JeffreyCH, I'm so glad someone has finally applied gummy worms to physics. Laughing I knew it wasn't coincidence that I landed a new trick that day my friend brought them out on the boat.

... and, I didn't even have an X-star.
