| Recently the water has been pretty calm (pretty rare for our lake) so i've been working on some new surface tricks. I'm having some trouble with my boardslides and i know what i'm doing wrong but i don't know how to correct it. I can't seem to get the full 90 degree rotation while heading up the wake. I can slide a 90 around no problem in the flats and no problem between the wakes, but when i try to butterslide i can't get the right spin so i just go over or back down the wake. Any sugestions? |

Try centering your weight more evenly, my guess is that your either leaning to far on either foot causing yourself to edge in that direction. _________________ Random Acts Of Dumbness Will Always Be Rewarded. |

Are you riding with your center fins? Removing my center fins made butterslides a lot more controllable for me. A good drill Igo through is to slide a 90, stay in the slide and move left to right, right to left learning to control your slide. _________________

Okie Boarder, Uhhhh no. In edging drills you try not to slide.
I'm talking about sliding 90 and staying 90, slowly work back and forth till you have full control of the slide. If you put it on your back edge you will slide out....lake enema time _________________

If the 90s are no problem in the flats, try staying directly behind the boat and doing a butterslide on the wash from the prop. This is how I learned to do backside butterslides on the wake. There not much of a hump in most cases, but just enough to get used to staying on a particular line during your slide, and rough enough to mimic the chop you get from the wake. Once you can do that for some distance, move to the wake, cut into it from outside, and if you're still having trouble, try bringing your knees up slightly to initiate the turn. Not an ollie, just enough to take some of your weight off the board. It will make it easier to break your fins loose, and once you get the balance part down, you can enjoy some longer slides. Also make sure you're holding the handle low by your waist. You may already be doing this, but you're much less likely to catch your lead edge during the slide.
Oh, one more thing you could try is to do a surface 180 across the peak of the wake. This may or may not prove beneficial to you, but once you can do it turning both directions on each side, you can work on doing the turn and moving back in the direction you came. This would be either a 90 degree turn or a 270 depending on whether you ride away normal or switch. Just some things to try that helped me. Hopefully it helps you as well. _________________

JeffreyCH, I took all of my fins off. I just have small molded ones now. I'll try the drill too... I think we're going out today.
I'll try the surface 180 across the peak too.
Thanks for the help guys! |

What I do to get into a boardslide is ollie up the wake and land 90 degrees to the boat. It sounds harder, but I find it easier and less likely to catch an edge going up the wake. _________________ Grow some. |

jctwake, that's really how you're supposed to do it, but I deal with small wakes, so there is little need. I like to just do a surfer carve and push the back of my board across the wake into a lipslide. _________________

I ride a board that has molded in fins so i take the centers out. I never ride with my fins on i feel it'll help you learn control faster without relying on the "training wheels" as i like to call them. For boardslides you're going to want to practice your surface 180's in the wash. This will help you get comfortable putting weight into your front foot and initiating the turn on the lip. Remember to keep the handle low. This way your pulling more at your waist level which will in turn keep your center of balance low. Once you are comfortable ride them up the lip with the same technique keeping even weight once in the slide. Knee's bent.
jctwake, I found learning this way first made ollieing into it alot easier. But everyone progresses differently so dont get discouraged Christobull, !

I see what you mean now. I was thinking totally different the way I was interpeting it the first time...LOL! I'm starting to work on my slides a bit. It's funny because my 9 YO can do them pretty good now and he saw I was trying the slide in the flats and the little ollie to lip slide and I could see him trying to coach me from the boat Saturday. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

JeffreyCH, Okie Boarder, I think it depends on the drill. I've seen edging drills just like what JeffreyCH is talking about. You do practice your edge and move left to right, but your board is perpendicular to the boat. It can be done heelside or toeside. Maybe what you're talking about? So, you're both right? _________________

| Thanks for all the help guys. I got my boardslides down finally. The ollying made it WAY easier to not only do the full rotation, but stay there. |

I used to have problems keeping it on the wake too. But just practised and held it longer and longer. The key for me was keeping my knees super flexed, handle low and close to the body keeping a super stable position and really kicking the back foot around lifting the board on top of the wake.
Now it's no problem at all. _________________ Suck it up and get hardcore! |
