|
|
i was wondering what peoples opinions were on whether or not tight bindings would reduce the chances of knee injuries. i have a couple ideas that i wanted to run across the experts.
i've been using crummy low end gator bindings and have noticed that of the "close call" wrecks that i've had, one foot has escaped the binding while the 2nd foot was stuck on the board as it continued to rotate. each time i felt that any more board movement could have done some damage.
this lead me to the theory that if the board stayed on both feet through these wrecks, the board could not twist my knees up since my waist would rotate or stop the board from a bad spin.
what is your opinion?
thanks |

Loose bindings are dangerous, a 1 in 1out crash is the most potential for a twisted knee or ankle. Since I blew my laces out and 3 of the 4 sets went to the bottom of the lake and I had rig up some laces, I have stopped going for big jumps since my bindings loosen up. My new 08 Murray CT's should be here any day now, so I can go back to going big. I've had one 1 in 1 out crash and it scared me, no injury, but really got me thinking. I ordered new bindings the next day. _________________

Not to mention the 1 in 1 out head slam. I got one last night.. got more air then I've even gotten but i caught an edge right when I came down. Backfoot came out and the board swung up and hit me in the head and now I have 8 shiny new staples haha. Worst part is i can't ride until it heals though .
Definatly riding with tight binding from now on... I was told to keep them a little loose because if they're too tight you can get a concussion if you fall hard but the staples helped persuade me. |

| Once you start progressing a bit, ditch the low-end bindings. They're fine for learning and getting most of the basics down but if you can only afford to upgrade one thing (either boots or the board) do the boots first. I fortunately don't have any experience with it but I can definitely see someone twisting a knee/hip out or breaking a leg in a one foot in/one out scenario. |

You're feet should be coming out on hard falls where you're catching an edge. I'm dealing with an ankle injury right now that is from having my bindings too tight. 1 in 1 out isn't good. It happens, but if you're going to come out of them, you want both feet to come out. _________________

i have been doing this because ive had a bad case of a hiper extension. i guess its not a good idea.
what can you do to keep from getting ligaments popped from hiper extensions? they seem to be the only injury i come close to encountering. |

Proper warm up and stretching will be the best thing. If it gives you problems after riding, you could try a hot and cold treatment where you ice it for 10-15 minutes then normally you'd soak it in luke warm water, but since it's your knee this may be difficult. You could heat up a towel in the microwave and wrap it instead. Just alternate back and forth about 3 or 4 times each night and it will get the blood circulating better to help it heal. That sounds like the kind of injury that will keep occurring easily unless you become less active on it for a long period of time, but these things will help and keep you riding. _________________

turbohoje, thankfully I don't have any experience with ACL injuries, but I hear a lot of guys on here talk about theirs, so hopefully they can offer up some better advice. _________________
