If they knew what wakeboarding was in 1970 they might have made this. Its a 1970 MFG Gypsy Tri-hull with a 1990 50hp outboard. New floor, interior panels, seats, custom (homemade) tower & "wakeboard rack" , and I'm on the water for less then $2000 bucks. |

Left me with enough cash to buy a new 09 CWB pure 141 w/ CWB Torque Bindings. Beats sitting on the beach. |

My guess is the wake is less than great with a trihull.
However, you have been awarded 10,000 style points, that thing is fugin sweet. |

Yeah, I wonder what getting pulled out of the water is like.
Wonder if he could add a wedge? |

Wake is not ideal but it gets the job done & with good technique I can get out of the water almost instantly.
Its funny you mentioned putting a wedge on it, I tried using the hydrofoil on the motor, by flipping it over to create down force rather then lift, but the boat was a dog took like 100yds to get me out of the water and the wake didn't show much improvement.
I've got 300 pounds of ballast bags, plus passengers to play around with for some wake shaping but with yesterdays water temp at 58degrees I think the experimenting will have to wait for next summer.
This picture was from like July before I put the tower on. I can get a few more inches with full passenger load or couple hundred pounds of ballast. Plus that picture is with a 75 foot rope, I've shorted it up to 50ft and that helped. |

I used to have an old MFG 17' tri-hull from about '72. Had an old Johnnyrude 100 HP 2-stroke on there. Neat old boat. |

how long does that thing take to get up on plane??? i have 300 pounds also, and with 4 guys in the boat, it takes at least 30 seconds to get up on plane. longer if i trim it all the way up. |

I can see how that could be a little confusing. Its 300lb of ballast & passengers but only to a max weight of 1200 pounds. Any more then that and Its a pain to get it to plane out. Even at 1200 pounds it'll get on plane in 15-30 seconds. Knowing I can't add more weight, my only way to work on wake shape will be to try different of the weight. |

With nothing better to do this winter I figured I'd make some racks for my homemade tower.
Here they are after fabrication.
Hopefully the ice will be off the lake & I can be the first if not one of the first people to ride in Western Massachusetts, this Saturday MARCH 20th.
If you want to see the story behind this old boat check out:

dude your story rocks. I have a similar story with my boat. Homemade tower, 1970s boat, outboard..... you're right. It definitely beats sitting on the beach. And I guarantee we put more hours on our boat wakeboarding than anyone else on our lake does. _________________ Isaiah 43:2 --> When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.

Awesome boat! You really did a great job with it.
Have you been able to get out and ride yet? If so hows the water temp and are you using a dry/wet suit? You might just be the motivation I need to get the boat out, ready and on the lake!! I'm in Boston but I generally ride on Quinsig in Worcester. |

Thanks.
I got out on the water on March 20th. It was 75 & sunny with a water temp of 43 degrees F. Both my friend and I had full 5mm wetsuits with hoods & its was great, of course we had the lake to ourselves.
Once we were up and riding it felt like summertime, I didn't even notice the cold spray. We learned quick though that once you fall, get your hands & toes out of the water until the boat came back. It made a huge diffrennce in how long you could stay before getting "cold".
Since the 20th I've been out 2 more times. The water was 50 degrees & I wore my 3/4 3mm wetsuit, I'll admit 50 degree water & a short suit was a little chilly. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. |
