I have one of those Hydroslide boards that I started with both my size and the boy's size. Could I use some of that pipe insulation foam along all the edges and use these as tramp boards to work on some spins and grabs?

Probably not the best idea. If you have some sort of board that extends beyond your stance you'll want something that is soft. Coming down on the tail/nose, or worse yet the corner of the tail/nose could a) possibly puncture through your mat. b) cause injury to the jumpers ankles and/or knees.

I still think the best, most simple set up is a skate deck with shoes mounted to it. It creates a stance for you, doesn't kill too much bounce (anything wider will limit your bounce), and you can still practice a variety of grabs.

would work just fine. just dont go beyond your limits.
get busy and post pics.
would be especially easy for grabs since you know your not gonna get out of shape on those. and youll be spinnin on it in no time.

youll be out of breath in 30 seconds (trust me) so it really wont matter! Laughing
dont forget to tie up a rope and handle too.

Tramp boards suck. I got to use one this past week and it was horrible. Ive used one in the past at a demo at the projects one time and thought it was cool, but I was jumping on an olympic style trampoline. Once you get those boards on a regular type of trampoline they suck. Its really alot harder to recover from hairy situations as well.

We have a couple old skate decks too. Sounds like maybe that is the better idea?

STANG KILLA SS, what did you make yours out of again?

I used to use an old directional board on my tramp. I thought that without the fins and sharp edges it would be great. But, I ended up hurting my knee pretty bad doing an invert. I think it would depend what you're working on. Grabs and spins would probably be okay, but IMO I would not try anything off axis for safety reasons.

again if your just doing grabs and 3s give the old board a try youll love it and have great tool. a skate board is going to teach bad habits to grab the wrong spots. ok for spins though.
unless your doing inverts youll be just fine. just get on the tramp and give it a try. just jump a couple times, if you feel unsafe get off lol.

okie i made mine from 3" dense gymnastics mat/foam.

these guys that are talking about dangers are all talking about attempting inverts.
worst that ever happens to me doing grabs and 360s is i land on my butt and thats rare.
take your skirt of and get on that tramp! hahah thats sig material. Mr. Green

On the contrary, with the exception of nose and tail grabs it will only teach good habits of grabbing between your legs. With a skate deck there is zero chance of grabbing tindy, or tailfish. For slob, you can always just grab your toe.

Well, I'm an idiot, so I would still do the same things that hurt me before, but the foam board gave me an idea. They sell those thick foam body boards at places like Walmart, and one of those could easily be cut to wakeboard size and strapped to your feet in some fashion.

I'll give both a try and see what seems to work better. Do y'all think the pipe insulation foam would be sufficient around the edges to make sure the board doesn't dig into the mat?

I used an old trick ski and a set of old kids snowboard bingings. This works great cuz you can ratchet your shoes right on to the board. The trick ski is a little wider than a skateboard so grabbing is easy. the nose and tail only stick out about 6 inches beyond your feet.

The problem I ran into is I'm 165 pounds and the force put on the tramp while trying to whip backrolls to blind and inverts in general ended up breaking the legs off my trampoline. Those round trampolines just aren't built to withstand anything too crazy. An olympic tramp is always going to be best.

A good thing to do also is to get your rope tied at the same height that you will be peaking your jumps at. And even add a peice of bungee cord into the line to allow for some play.
