oil filter braking my heart

right so the time came to change the oil again. So we heated it up, drained it, but then somehow broke our oil filter extractor tool on the oil filter.

So we had to leave the boat and come back to it another day after getting a new oil extractor tool. Now the tool is just twisting the filter, a bit like if you got the top and bottom of a beer can and twisted it.

We rammed a screwdriver into it and tried to turn it but still wouldnt budge and bent the screwdriver that we used turn it.

Any advice on how to get the old filter off.

Its a 2007 malibu vlx with a monsoon 340 engine.

heat and ice.. heat the block around the filter with a heat gun, put ice on the filter itself, then pray like hell... It sounds like you did my typical bang screwdriver threw it and turn... GOOD LUCK...

If you have the room, I've seen someone "upgrade" to a crowbar after the screwdriver failed.

Heat causes metal to expand, try it with everything cold. I've changed oil in my vehicles for years and never had a problem getting the filter off, it shouldn't be any where near that tight, are you sure it's not cross threaded or something? What kind of extractor are you using? I've always had the best luck with the ones that look like over sized channel locks.

Lisle makes a oil filter strap wrench part # 63500. It will take the filter off.
Should be available at most auto parts stores. Try auto zone they may rent it.

Take the metal and filter out and the only thing left will be the part that screws onto the block. Weld 1/4" bolts to a piece of metal that will fit into the holes and spin it off. Next time lube the gasket with fresh oil and only tighten by hand. I don't even own an oil filter wrench.

the screwdriver trick usually works for me, but sometimes it just opens the filter up like a can.

in my worst experience, ive used a huge set of channel locks to smash it to the point where it cant go anywhere and i can twist it off.

a heat gun might help, but you'll prbly be there for hours trying to get it warm enough to have an effect. propane is probably the hottest thing you can use near the area but use great caution since you can ignite the oil (although i would doubt it). mapp or oxy will light it up for sure so dont try that.

is it a remote mount filter of any kind that you can play these games outside of the boat?

i definately didnt cross the treads and i always put a bit of oil round the rubber ring before screwng it on only by hand, so i dont know why its seized up like this.

We were using quiksilver filters before and i checked the indmar website and they recommened Penzoil PZ3 filters. This is the first one of those that we used.

i was using one of those extractors thats a ring with a screw that makes the ring smaller. Then i tried one of the chain ones. Now i've gone and got this special vice grips that looks like an instrument of torture but i ve been told its for oil filters

We're at the stage where the bottom of the filter has been ripped off and the top and a bit of the can is the only bit remaining. We're gonna try weld something to it and hopefully that will do the trick.

this type of oil filter wrench is the best one available. It will get that POS off your engine;)

What kind of filter was it?

Those fram tough guard POS with the gator grip on the end will never come off, i think that gator grip gives to much of a grip and people over torque them.

Just make sure you fill the oil filter full of oil and coat the gasket with oil and just hand tighten it. Use a good quality oil filter, like a Wix or Mobil 1, and all will be good.

As far as getting it off, without seeing exactly what is happening, just keep trying new things till you get it off. Last resort is to cut the casing and filter off till just the sealing surface is left and you can usually ge them off that way with a hammer and punch.

I've done 100's of these and no 2 are a like.
