Is this phrase grammatically correct? The new guy around here uses it seriously all the time and I'm going insane.

Not really. correct implies 100% accuracy in and of itself, right?

I agree. Not only is it redundant, but it says the same thing two different ways in a row.

lol

One of the best detentions I got in high school... the teacher was talking about redundancy and I kept asking her to repeat herself and re-explain.... took her about 10 minutes to figure out what was going on... Laughing

precise and accurate are two different things. precise is a guy that throws three darts and hits a double 12 every time. accurate is a guy that throws three darts that average out to a bullseye.

no, wait, that's not true. Accuracy is when each dart hits the same spot, though it might not be the bullseye. Precision is when they all hit the intended bullseye. i think. I just wrote somethign on this last month for work, and I already forgot it...

In scientific terms, accuracy is how close an experiment is to the "true" value while precision is how much each sample within that experiment differs from each other.

bonsaitree, I looked up both definitions and neither one said anything about darts. Weird. Rolling Eyes

yea, that was it. i was writing about blood analyzer results when plotted on a chart to determine accuracy and precision. Lots of dots tight together, regardless of where they were, were an example of highly precise results, and results closest to the target value, but not tightly grouped, were more accurate. I think. It's all a blur.

cameraboy, can you state that in terms of darts please? I need to know how to average a bullseye.

"They were there for the whole entire day."

"Whole entire" is one of my wife's favorites. She's a moron. So I tell her I'll give her the whole entire thing if she's a good girl.

cameraboy, so if I throw darts consistently poorly and they all land 2 feet under the dart board you would still say I am being precise? And if I am throwing for a double 20 and land near the bullseye I'm being accurate?

Anyway,
Accurate:
free from error or defect; consistent with a standard, rule, or model; precise; exact.

Precise:
Clearly expressed or delineated; definite: The victim gave a precise description of the suspect.
Exact, as in performance, execution, or amount; accurate or correct

think of it like a number line. 1.00002 is very precise, but if i'm aiming for 2, 1.99 is more accurate than 1.96....both have the same level of precision.

I don't know about this one because something can be "partially correct" so therefore something can be "exactly correct" just like something else can be "almost correct". Partially and Exactly would be adverbs in this case. It's like in calculus class when you get the exact answer out of your calculator and just write down that as your answer and it is correct, but you get points off because you didn't prove how you got there with work. i don't know, it's all malarche too me. Laughing

"almost correct" is the same as "incorrect" though.
