Posted: May 10, 2009 2:29 pm Post subject: Will spectra ropes that have handles without floats sink |
|
|
I just bought my first boat. I need to buy a rope. I have read enought to know to get the spectra. I like the rope package of the proline lg it has a chamios handle and I can get it for $100 from overtons. I am concerned that since the handle doesn't have any floats on it that we will need to pull it in everytime I need to restart because it will sink. Does this sound right. If so it will not work for me as most boarding will be done with just my wife driving and young kids in the boat. Any suggestions on if spectra ropes without the pencil floats on the handles will sink.

| The grip of the handle should float.

| it wont sink if you are just coming around to pick up the rider, but if you stop the boat for a significant amount of time (ie. changing riders) then it will sink.

I used some foam rubber pipe insulation on mine, floats fine.

Yes it will sink...had almost the exact same setup and the handle drags it down. Actually got kind of annoying until my friend ran it over with the rope

I am to cheap to experiment with different $100 + ropes so what do you think about this one. Is there one that the general consensus is a good rope that most people like.
Thanks for the help.

Never heard of the handle, but I don't think that matters. It looks perfectly fine to me and the grip looks nice. The sinking handle really was annoying though, to me anyways. Definitely not worth the $100.

| yes the LG slowly sinks, I ended up filling mine with foam to fix the problem. Proline even put a thin float on mine when they sent it to me, but it still would sink.

What's wrong with pulling the handle in every time you change out riders?
I think some of the spectra lines have a neoprene jacket that is suppose to float them, but the coated lines definitely do sink without floats on the handle. I would probably go with something like the Accurate Jacket line:

That CWB/proline handle will definitely sink from my experience, but then again, I always just pull the line in after every set. I wouldn't feel all that comfortable having it just floating out there...

| I wouldn't mind pulling it when I change riders but I am not good, so I end up crashing way more often than changing riders. It will probably just be me and my wife in the boat with our kids who are age 4 and 6 most of the time. I think it would be more work than it is worth to try and get my 6 year old to pull the rope in every time I crash. I do appreciate the help from everyone.

| when the boat is moving they won't sink, just when you stop. So if you are just turning around to pick up somebody after a fall, it won't be an issue since you don't have to stop.

Second this, if we're talking about looping back around, then it shouldn't be an issue no matter what setup you get.

Get the Synthesis. It has a nice soft foam triangle shaped grip and it floats just fine. My experience with the new Proline ropes is that they float fine. Not used the newest LG so I can't comment. Pretty sure they all have a foam filled handle now to make them float. The original LGs sank but I know the LGT and Synthesis float just fine.

this airhead rope is great, however, the handle will eat your hands up without gloves. And even then, it does ok. Your best be it to buy one of these ropes and then add your favorite handle to it.

Yup, thats what we did, bought the rope and then put an accurate handle on the end and it works great....its a good rope...handle is not the best though...picked up the rope and handle for a little under 60 and was skeptical, but the rope is great.

summit,
That proline lg is incredible for a handle. I've used one a couple times and loved it. I'd own one if i had the money.

| Does anyone know of a one piece construction handle that has a triangle shape grip like the Proline SK or LGT? I just got a helium one piece handle and am just not a fan of the big round grip. So call me picky but Id like to find a triangle or oval handle grip with an anti-roll frame.
