I have a 2001 Mobius V and was wanting to do new graphics on the side of the boat. Wraps are expensive, but I was thinking some type of grafitti mural or mobius on the side would look cool. First of all has anyone ever seen one done and second would i probably have to put a clear coat on top and would it hurt my gelcoat?

So, for a better answer than that^^

By hurt your gel, if you mean structurally no, but it will probably stain it permanently. yes you would want to clear coat it or it will chip

It's your boat, if you want some kind of graffiti go for it.

Hell yes! But do it right.. if you aren't an artist yourself then pay someone to do it. I think you'll probably find a lot a graffiti artists would jump at the chance and may not ask for a lot of money. Damn, they do it on buildings for free. Just be prepared to to the prep, masking and finishing yourself. Look on local street art websites and contact the artists you like, give them a basic premise and then let them go wild.

Could be the greatest!

Gelcoat is porous, it could turn out pretty awesome as others have noted, but keep in mind that it will probably be a lot of work if you ever want to restore the gelcoat back to stock. (E.G. either using really gnarly solvents or wetsanding.)

Prep will probably be everything to get it stick, and yes, if you want it to hold up for any substantial period of time, you're probably going to want to shoot some clear over the top of it.

Go with a wrap. If you every want to get out of that boat a wrap will be easier to peel off.

If you wanted to see how it looked although this would take forever you could painters tape the side of your boat and test it out. Personally i would just save up and wait to get it wrapped. It will be alot less headache and come out alot cleaner looking, plus its easily removable incase you get tired of it or want/need to sell it down the road.

Yes, do it! Any don't forget that you don't want to let your parents in on your idea until it is done. It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Dude do it for sure! maybe chat with your local paint shop and maybe even boat builders if you can find one and ask them before you get started as they will tell you exactly what to buy.
Definetly want a clear coat on it though and kiss the old look of your boat goodbye as it will never come off without damaging it underneath but hell it'l be unique!

spay / auto paint wont work if you plan to use it in saltwater for very long. i dont know how well it will hold up if you buoy the boat either.

it might be worth spending the extra for marine paint.

personally, i'm going to paint my boat with auto paint this summer. but i never leave it on the lake.
