....a wakeboard rack will in fact float with two boards strapped in. Fortunately, it didn't hit my rear seat passenger in the face and we were able to circle back and retrieve it. It had two brand new boards in it. Whew!!
How do you guys think Monster Tower will respond when I email them the pics?

| It kinda depends on how long you've had it, but my guess is that they'll warranty that without argument. See if you can get better close up pictures of the broke weld. It looks like it was welded way too cold and too much on the cross bar, not enough on the post. There really doesn't look like any penetration at all. I hope they either fired the guy who welded that, or he learned how to weld a LOT better.

Dam thats some dodgy welding! Very lucky indeed mate glad to know no-one was hurt.
I'd say you'll have a pretty good chance of getting a new one!

HHI Dave, HOLY TOLEDO!! Thank God no one was sitting right behind that to get a flying rack of boards to the skull at 20+ mph. How is monster going to respond? By dropkicking their welder in the nizzuts. It definitely wasn't going to sink with two boards on it though. I don't know if you have ridden without a vest on, but pretty much you sink as the board floats on top of the water, very uncomfortable feeling and one of the added dangers to riding without a vest.

Email sent. Thanks.

Yup, same reason I got the MT2, and my buddy Matt has one we put on yesterday. Well, finished it yesterday. Except we screwed up his front paws,a nd mounted them too far in and forward, so his window doesnt close
Gotta remount them and fill the holes.

Doesn't look like the weld failed, looks like the crossbar tube gave out and went with the weld. See the big hole in the rack itself? No point in notching out a hole, when the tube is already notched.
Either way, glad Monster is fixing it.

haugy, does not look like the crossbar is notched, that is just the weld built up which gives the appearance. There is no hole. What a dog stuff weld...no penetration at all!

I didn't mean there was no drilled hole, that is obvious! HA, ok carry on. I wonder what the purpose of that drilled hole is. Did anything possibly fly out of there when it fell and you didn't notice?

the hole is for when you are welding it up. if you dont put a small expansion hole in it, when you go to finish up your weld, the air inside the tube is hot, and can sometimes blow it out, so the hole is for the hot air and gasses to excape without blowing a small part of your weld out. but thats nice to see that they are replacing it.

| That's awesome that they are going to give you a replacement. That looks like one of the much older racks before there redesgin with the new triangle shaped cross tube. Pretty damn cool of them to go so far beyond what is required.

Hollywood, you misunderstood me. I try again.
The Rack crossmember, that has the little hole we are talking about. We shall refer to that as the "Rack".
The piece still attached to the tower with the leftover weld showing off the end of it will be called the "Mount".
What I meant is, that it's strange that the Rack has that huge gaping hole. The edges are not smooth which to me, means it was not put there on purpose.
It looks as though it pulled that section out of the Rack, and is still attached at the mount.
If we got a side shot of the Mount, we could see if the welds actually held, and the aluminum pulled out of the Rack. Or if the welds failed, and that's just a big gaping hole in the Rack.

There is no big gaping hole in the rack. The edges are a weld bead that didn't penetrate anything. There is also part of the weld broken off on the mount as well. We already see the mount and there is no chuck of rack on it, it is just a piece of aluminum pipe with a really thick wall and part of the weld bead broken off on it still. The mount has a weld bead left on it giving the illusion something is missing inside, but if you were to grind off the bead on the rack it would be a smooth piece of pipe left there, with the gas hole drilled in.
Come back to this thread after the wedding and you'll figure it out.

I just realized I used mount in a place I should have said rack.
Glad to hear MT is covering it, surely they should.

Monster is awesome...I had a weld break on my tower(probably because we're so good), on the upper bar where it swivels. They sent me a new to crossmember no questions asked.
Also, I've probably mentioned this before, but my buddy drove over one of my racks and one of the fingers bent. I called them to see if I could just buy the finger for the side that broke and they sent me the piece free within a few days, complete with can coozies and stickers.

| While they should and have, man this really speaks for a company when they go so far above and beyond what is required of them. That rack is obviously way out of warranty and they didn't even flinch about replacing it. There are probably a few companies out there that would not have even emailed you back.
