Well friends, it seems I have inherited the family ski boat. Unfortunately, it has been very neglected since I moved away some 7 years ago. As it stands, the upholstery is in very poor shape, and the rest of the interior similar problems. Mechanically, it seems the boat was never properly winterized and my brother apparently drove the boat with a failed water impeller overheating it. At any rate, I have found a cracked block, popped freeze plugs, and cracked exhaust manifold.
Its going to a local reputable mechanic to make the final call on what needs to be done, but I expect a new long block at the least.
So I have a decision to make. What I want is a boat that I can do a little of everything with. I ski and want to get into wakeboarding as well.
So, do I drop several thousand into this boat to get it functional, or just scrap it and look for a something used?
Weighted well and with a tower, would this make a reasonable wakeboarding boat? |

| What you need to find out is how much will it cost to fix up the boat vs. what you could get another boat for. For me it would be to fix the boat if it cost the same or a little more, but that is based on my memories of the old boat that my dad sold years ago. I don't know what type of memories are attached to the boat you inherited so it is more of a personal call on what you want to do. But, with the way everything is right now, you could probably get a good deal on a boat. |

I found an 89 malibu sunsetter with under 500 hours on it for 7.5k with only a few issues. That boat you just described - nothing on it works. You'd pay a TON of money fixing it up and then you're still left with a boat that would limit your wakeboarding ability.
I recommend looking for one of the boats on the budget wakeboarding chart and getting rid of that thing you have now any way you possibly can. Those other boats can do "everything" they are just also particularly good for wakeboarding should you get into the sport.
My second option would be buying any I/O that didn't have issues. My dad as an 89 bayliner and it works good for just about everything. has a little trouble wakeboarding wise but hey, it's a smaller I/O, thats just the name of the game.
My third and last option would actually be not even buying a boat and selling that thing you have now for anything you can get for it. I would never even consider going through the trouble of fixing what you'll have to. _________________ Today is a chance to become a greater person than the person we were the day before. |

I had a 1985 19' ski supreme that I completely restored a few years ago. I put an automatic ballast system in it, Tower, Completely repainted the hull, new interior, Stereo, etc. It was a great boat. It made a wake that was respectable and was great on gas, I could be pulling boarders at full weight for 5-6 hours on about 15 gallons of fuel. I'll see if I can find any pictures of it. _________________ 2003 Mastercraft Xstar w/ the 6.0 Cadillac |
