What is the best way to get 3 monitors on a laptop?
One will be the laptop and then 2 - 22" monitors. _________________ Wakeskating

flixmaster, at first glance I didn't think it was possible, because pretty much all laptops video cards are designed for only 2 displays.
However, apparently there is a way to hook up a 3rd screen via USB. This is obviously not optimal as USB is considerably slower than a display cable.
I would think there might also be a hardware solution to emulate 2 monitors by splitting the single output. That would make it act like there are 2 monitors stretched to 3, but I have no idea if this exists, just suspecting.
This looks like the better solution anyway, although I don't know how much performance it's going to cost you with the USB overhead.

What on Earth are you doing that could possibly demand 3 monitors? _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

I couldn't even get two to work with my laptop.
Flix needs 1 for all his websites, 2 for all the orders he is filling and 3 for monitoring the forums. |

I use dual monitors at work. It is awesome. Nice big monitor filled with work, small laptop monitor filled with wakeboarder.com, gmail, and texags.
So even when I'm surfing the web, it looks like I'm still working. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Ontrider is pretty close..
With 2 I just seem to fill up the 22 monitor with websites. email on the laptop monitor. Then when I start creating websites or working on stuff for other people(not part of the wb.com family) my stuff gets cluttered. I would like one monitor just for development and other peoples stuff.
** and my laptop monitor is tiny. We use those small 710m computers so we can take them all over the place. _________________ Wakeskating

flixmaster, 710m!!!
Oh man, those are great for travel but holy hell I couldn't imagine using one daily. My boss has that laptop - he specifically bought it because it is easier to manage on flights.
If I was you, I'd just rock the biggest external monitor possible - maybe even buy a 32" widescreen 1080P model to do it.
scott a, I've got 4 monitors on my desk. And yes I use them all!
It's good for 5280 horizontal pixels. (3x1280 1x1440) _________________

I have desktops but I only use those for video stuff. _________________ Wakeskating

NKCrider, finance.
I tend to have several things going at once. Really makes it easier when you can have all the info up and ready when working on reports, or talking to clients, etc. _________________

I always thought it was silly to have more than one monitor until I actually tried it. I've got two big displays for my laptop at my office and I am hooked (my work laptop is some tiny Toshiba tablet thing). I'm actually looking around for a similar setup for the house. _________________

Depending on the video card in the 710m you can check the Matrox devices that can stretch your display over 2 or 3 monitors...
I've actually got a 3 monitor model laying around that isn't being used so if you need one let me know.
BTW - here's my setup _________________ http://www.dallaswakeboarding.com |

Here's some info on it - I've used it a few times with the mac book pro, it's decent. The setup I posted a pic of above is just 3 dual-dvi video cards in a pc box...That way I can control the resolution on each individual monitor. with the Matrox you would definitely want 3 of the same monitors, and depending what your video card supports, you'll have to pick between 4:3 or 16:9 - I also have one of the usb-->Vga devices, it works pretty well for monitoring or viewing things, but it's kind of slow, like using VNC to work on a remote machine. _________________ http://www.dallaswakeboarding.com |

I would just use a different comp (PC or lappy) for your third. |

Anyone that hasn't tried dual monitors should give it a try. I've got dual 20's at work and at home and I'm thinking of adding a third to each setup or going to larger monitors. I'm constantly working on multiple things and additional monitors are the only way to go when doing that. |
