I thought of trying polevaulting... thing is I just couldn't picture myself running around at full speed with a big stick, trying to hit it in the ground at a predetermined location.

Just play soccer.

i do play soccer...in IN it's a fall sport, and if i do track, 1) i don't have to put up with my mom's constant bitching and 2)i get my letter jacket after soccer if i do track.

Just make sure you dont do what that guy in the sydney x-games did when the pole when under the bar and he went over then he got the pole in the crotch on the way down. Most painful looking thing i've ever seen.

Best workout for Pole Vaulting: Get to the climbing rope.

Start, if you can, with only your arms - no legs.

Once you can do that consistantly, start sitting at the rope and climbing with your legs stretched in front of you.

Also, the high peg board, push ups, many many push ups, hand stand push ups. Don't worry too much about squats. Your speed and where yo step off will bend the pole. You need to work on upper body strength and flexibility.

Determine if your push leg is right or left. This will determine what side of the pole you stand on.

Then, you'll have to have someone show you. That's really the only way. Start at 6' or so. Don't worry too much about height until you have the runway, plant and step off down pat.

Have fun. Work out.

Some dude died pole-vaulting. He went up and either his hands slipped or the pole snapped and he fell headfirst into the thing you slam the pole into. That's one crazy-ass looking sport... my dad used to do it... set a local record... crazy-ass mutha$#^&

I did PV in Junior high and freshman year. I thought it was pretty easy, but I was also doing high jump as well. It does take a lot of upperbody strength as well. I think form has the must impact on it. I had a lot of fun doing it though. Being a sprinter I got out of a lot of BS by also doing 2 field events. go for it.

Yes I meant the sydney olympics. I will try to find the video after im done eating dinner with my dorm-mates. It's kinda funny, yet terribly painful looking at the same time.

My Dad set a state record in th early 60s in high school. It definitely takes some good upperbody strength. Anyway he ended up getting a scholarship and going to Dental school and buying a boat and now I'm happy. So ya, you should pole-vault. Oh and know who Sergei Bubka is. He's a Russian that's broken the world record a bunch of times. I'm not sure if he still holds it though.

Didn't your mom ever teach you not to run with sticks?? j/k Looks pretty fun, good luck with that. Maybe you could throw some spins when you vault over the bar.... give the sport some style. Smile
