Birthday is coming up and I am considering an iPhone. Those of you who actually own one, do you like it? I currently have an LG flip phone an am just ready for something new. The main thing that worries me about the iphone is texting and how it's touchscreen with no feedback. Makes it tricky in class etc

Have it and love it. Texting is fast once you get used to typing on the keyboard, but you will have to look at the screen to do it. No more blind texting under your desk.

or while your driving Wink

I've had mine now for a while, and they are very good, very happy with mine, and with 3.0 firmware coming out soon, it will really improve it.

never thought I'd need or want one, but have now had one for about 18 months and will never go back. I've got the V1; I'll probably upgrade to whatever the newest one is next year.

I would check the AT&T 3G map to make sure you've got coverage wherever you spend most of your time.

tball,
That's what's been holding me back lately is that they don't have 3g coverage in auburn. I just recently found out that we will have 3g coverage in auburn soon. So that's why i'm about to jump on the bandwagon.

Chad H, it will just be slower without 3G. Plus in your house it will be on wifi, and I have to imagine AU has wifi on campus.

When you are on the regular network it will just be a little slower loading webpages. I really don't notice a difference in email delivery other than pictures in email load slower. Still not a big deal.

Once you go iPhone you will never go back. Be patient with the keyboard. In time you will become much faster at using it.

best phone ever. hands down. just buy it. Although if you can wait, there will likely be a new model released when they issue the new OS. Probably with extra/ removable memory, which would be nice.

It's an awesome phone with lots of great applications. Some are very useful as well, for instance wind speed analyzer and breath check if you taken too much alcohol. but I don't really know if it's really accurate.

Anyone got a take on what size to get? I've got a 2GB Nano right now, using about 80% of the space but I have >2GB in my iTunes library. If I get an iPhone, I'd be using it primarly over my Nano for music. In short, I don't see the need to get a 16GB for an extra $100.

I have no idea how much space the other software (like the OS, apps, and browser) takes up. How much is that? If I get an 8GB, is the other software going to take up more than 4GB?

pet575, the software takes up very little of the space. Very little.

I have about 2gb of music on mine, and that is more than adequate for my purposes. I really only use it for music at the gym. 2gb gives me enough space to keep it on shuffle and not hear the same song all that often.

So, I think the 8gb model is fine for the vast majority of users out there. Some people just have to have the biggest and baddest and those folks are the 16gb demographic. My boss is one of these people. He does not use anywhere near the available space on his iPhone.

The only argument I can conceive for the 16gb is for video. If you travel a lot, you could get quite a lot of video on the 16gb if you compressed it down to iPhone specs.

Thanks chavez. Sounds like 8GB is plenty. I'm not going to be doing much more than music, email, browsing, texting, and using apps. Not big on videos, so that shouldn't be a concern.

chavez, FTMFW.

pet575, add in the fact that you can get the free Pandora app that streams music to your phone based on what you like to listen to and you will have options outside just what is stored on your phone. I use Pandora more than the ipod when I am driving (as long as I'm in 3g areas).

Love my iPhone. Mine is the first gen. I wouldn't worry too much about 3G coverage. For one thing, free Wifi is everywhere these days. Also, if you don't have the coverage now, you probably will shortly. I have the 16gb. If you like lots of music, apps, and pics, that may be the way to go. I've got a few thousand songs, a few hundred pics, and several apps. Last I checked I had about 6gb of available space. I was worried about the screen scratching, but it has held up very well.

My only real complaint is that you can't send or receive pics through text. Sure you can email them, but it takes a little longer. When you receive a pic through text, you have to go to www.viewmymessage.com, type in a message ID and password to view the pics. Its just not convenient. Otherwise, its an excellent smart phone. Also, I wish the ring tones were louder.

There are now many iPhone compatible headunits with USB ports. Just put one in my boat. Makes for a nice combination.

Go for it. You won't regret it.

So is the iphone 3.0 different than the 2.0 in anyway or is it just a software upgrade?

freerider4, 3.0 is just new firmware.

There will most likely be a new/updated iPhone that will come out around that same time though. It will probably be introduced at an event in June.

Pulled the trigger on a 8gb model over the weekend. I spent about the first 3-4 hours wanting to throw it through whatever was nearby while I tried to figure everything out at once. After I got my feet under me, it was much easier than it was initially and much more intelligent features than I expected. Thing is freaking awesome!

Anyone know if there is an app out there (or some other capability) to allow you to use your iPhone as an iPod with an FM transmitter? I had this for my iPod Nano, but it does not work with the iPhone. I've got an AUX input in my Explorer, but if my son is watching a DVD while we're driving I've had to use an FM transmitter in order to listen to my iPod while he watches/listens to his DVD.

Thanks to all for the input and advice. Much appreciated!

pet575, you need an external FM transmitter, like the TuneCast or RoadTrip. Just make sure it is iPhone compatible - should say right on the packaging.
