Check this baby out.

Cliffnotes:
This 900 yard par 3 is in South Africa. The green is shaped like the African continent and completely surrounded by a sea of sand. You hit off a cliff over 1,400 feet above the hole and it takes 26 seconds for your ball to land. You have to take a helicopter to get to the hole. They post spotters around the green to let you know where your ball lands because you can’t possibly see it.

Padraig Harrington is the only person to ever par it. He did it in a playoff after a recent tournament there. It is the 19th-hole and only used for playoffs.

Quote:
The world’s longest and highest par three, the signature hole at Legends Golf and Safari Resort, has its tee box poised at a dizzying height atop of Hanglip Mountain, 1 410 feet above the green and is only accessible by helicopter!

This means that the ball needs to travel an incredible 830 metres from tee to green (the total distance across and down)!
Still, Padraig became the first-ever golfer to make par on this amazing hole in a playoff against Raphaël Jacquelin.

Balls hit off the tee are estimated to have a 'hang time' of 26 seconds, so a little help is needed in keeping an eye on the white dimpled orb. With technology in the form of four separate cameras and tracking equipment, Padraig and Raphaël were able to track their tee shots and the flight of their balls, while ball watchers stood ready to point out where the balls had landed on the ‘map of Africa’ green.

Your average thrill-seeking golfer can play this bizarre hole in addition to a round of 18 holes, or as an experience on its own, and a hole-in-one will earn you one million US dollars!

Raphael and Padraig may not have posted holes-in-one, but they are two of 18 well-known golfers who have each designed one of the course's signature holes. Trevor Immelman, Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Justin Rose, Vijay Singh, K J Choi and Retief Goosen have each designed a hole at Legends.

Legends Golf and Safari Resort was just one of the stands on display at the 2009 PGA Golf Show held last weekend at Country Club Johannesburg. For more on what was on offer at SA’s only Golf Show and to see which products won the Mole’s approval, click on the equipment tab at the top of the page and read ‘The Mole’s Golf Show Awards’.

Am I missing something? 400 meters should be around 440 yards.

I guess people rarely land on the green... but wouldn't that leave a huge ball mark or basically just plug in the ground?

Blackcreek, overall traveling 830 meters from hit to hole. Read the whole article. I can see how the title is confusing.

I still don't get any of the math... in the video it says it travels an elevation of 640 yards (which doesn't equal 1400 feet), and a distance of 310 yards. This does not equal a total of 400 yards, it does not equal 400 meters, it does not equal 830 meters, and it does not equal a total of 900 yards. No matter how you look at it.

Faust, maybe drawing a straight line between the tee box and pin? aka the hypotenuse of the triangle made by the cliff and the ground below

I want to play this hole. Can you imagine how much of an affect the wind would be on this hole? I could just see this in a cross wind, "uh yeah I'm going to start this 200 yards left of the green and let the wind drift it back" and the caddy just sits there like Shocked
