Calif woman gets 6 years for fatal texting crash
She was paying bills on her cell phone when her car hit line of vehicles
The Associated Press
updated 1:19 a.m. ET, Sun., April. 5, 2009
REDDING, Calif. - A woman who crashed into a line of stopped vehicles while text-messaging on her cell phone has been sentenced to six years in a California prison for killing a woman in one of the vehicles.

Deborah Matis-Engle was sentenced Friday by a judge in Redding, Calif.

Investigators said Deborah Matis-Engle was speeding and text messaging when she slammed into the vehicles stopped at a construction zone in August 2007.

Shasta County prosecutor Stephanie Bridgett said the 49-year-old woman had paid several bills by cell phone in the moments before the crash.

She was in the middle of one of those transactions when she struck a vehicle that burst into flames, killing 46-year-old Petra Winn.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Stotter said he will appeal.

Dragonlady8, texting and driving I feel is far more dangerous than drinking and driving (to an extent-obviously not 12 shots deep but even comparable to that ). People texting and driving are swerving all over the place, looking down, and simply not paying any attention whatsoever. The majority of violators I see on the road happen to be women, but I'm sure men are frequently at fault as well. I know I am. But you get a 19 year old puerto rican chick in miami driving and texting at the same time, you seriously have the most dangerous combination of a driver in the world- Hispanic + Female + Teenager + Hormones raging + Texting + Driving= CARNAGE.
I guess in Florida it is now illegal to even talk on the phone while driving, which I never heard that law until my buddy got the ticket in an accident that was clearly the other persons fault all because he was talking on the cell phone. The other driver merged/veered right into his right rear bumber/wheel well from the left lane with my friend just driving strait in the lane, and boom, he was on the cell phone, he got the ticket. A cop saw the entire accident, so this is how they knew about the cell phone.

Why are you giving me a lecture about texting ilubronix ?? Neutral Wink I bet you didn't even read the article, didja? Laughing

FL doesn't have a law on the books about cell phones ... yet. I know CA & NY do. But I for one hate holding a cell phone while driving. I've had earpieces and bluetooth earpieces ever since moving here since i get messages when traveling from point A to point B for work.

Yes but common sense is that you can't keep your eye on the road while driving & text messaging.
Plus she killed someone..... there's no appealing that one.

I don't think 6 years was enough, people that text and drive are just plain STUPID.

dlady - You can't be on your phone in NY, NY, CT, MA & CA. RI might've made it illegal too, but I'm not 100% sure.

I text while driving because I don't even have to look at the keys when I text (pathetic, I know). I don't do it a lot, but I do text while I drive. *Knock on wood* - never been in an accident or anything. It is dangerous, but I feel like so is looking at a GPS for directions, talking to people in your car (distraction), doing your make-up while driving - all of these can cause you to get into accidents.

That woman shouldn't appeal.

I too think it is ridiculous that she is appealing but I'm just saying that that is how it goes.

Why do people blame lawyers when they disagree with the rusults of a JURY trial? The lawyers were doing exactly what you'd want them to do if you were in their shoes - defending their clients!!!!!!!!

Guilty or not, if you were being sent to prison for 6 years I'm sure you'd appeal if you could anyway.

Ah yes, the classic, "yeah, but other people are doing things that are just as dangerous" deflecta-shield. Oldie, but a goodie.
