Im considering the new version of the macbook for college in the fall, and have been reading up on it when I found a major dissapointment...it doesnt have a firewire! Evil or Very Mad 50% of the reason I want a mac is for video editing and my camera only uploads through firewire. Is there any way to get an adapter or something to upload from the firewire port on the camera to a USB port without butchering quality (on my ancient laptop, I had to buy a bulky card with a firewire port attached to it that made the upload quality awful to upload since it didnt have a iEEE port) or do I need to look for a different laptop?

LFADAM, if you wait a few more months, apple will probably run their iPod+iComputer promotion for students.

I think it takes $200 off the MacBook Pro, and then you can turn around your iPod for around $200 as well. (you do have to pay for the ipod up front though, and then they send you a check later.) That should put the MacBook pro around $1600ish if you can swing that. Edit: I just checked and Apple only gives you $100 off for an educational discount on the MBP now. IMO it's worth the extra money for the screen realestate.

I actually started out with my MBP in college, but now it's mainly my desktop. I purchased a little Lenovo S10 netbook for $350 and put OSX on it, I think I've only taken my MBP to school once since getting this thing. It's so small and light, and it's kinda nice not having to worry about carrying around a $2000 machine in my bag...
