Dead 5g IPOD? Free fix

A few days ago my 5th gen IPOD quit producing sound either through the headphone jack or through the port. I searched on-line and found out that many people were having this same problem. I also found out that if you press on the lower right hand corner,just below the click wheel it will start working, briefly. I called Apple support and after swimming through their automated helper got throught to customer service. He basically stated that it was out of warranty and I could pay for additional support. I explained the problem and told him that I knew about pressing on the chassis, and then he put me on hold. After a few minutes he came back and said that Apple would offer me a free one time fix. Basically they know about the problem and are fixing them (or replacing them) for free. My return box came in the mail today so we will see what I get back. Hopefully it's not a refurb that someone else beat the crap out of. Mine was always well cared for. Being a year and a half out of warranty I guess I can't complain much. Apple didn't really owe me anything and they are fixing their product that clearly has a manufacturing defect.

the refurb will basically be like new, you wont get a scratched up or 'used' one.

Ohioboarder, I know people who swear that apple refurbs are better quality than their new stuff because of the stringent factory refurb process it goes through. In fact most Apple things I buy now now are refurb, same quality at a decent discount. You won't be able to tell the difference except for the box it came in.

Bowen, agreed. Even though I no longer have a family member working for the big fruit, I still would not hesitate to purchase from their refurb area.
