Hello everyone,
I'm new to this board so first of all I will introduce myself: my name is Serge, I own a 2008 Glastron GT-205 with a 5-L Volvo Penta engine. I'm an international student in New York University studying business. I like reading, I play musical instruments (synthesizers and drums), and I enjoy my life! I'm not a wakeboarder, but I might install a tower sometime in future.
Right, here goes my question. I'm new to boating and to all sorts of electrical questions related to my Glastron, so please excuse me for asking general questions. And yes, I did search the board prior to posting this thread.
I'd like to install new speakers on my boat. Right now it has the standard 150W 6" coaxial speakers which don't sound well, obviously. Could anyone suggest good speakers (preferably 6") that would not require me to install an amp or an additional battery? I don't know much about this technical stuff, nor do I want to increase the standard diameter of the hole for speakers.
Thank you! |

Check with your local car audio dealers and listen to what they have. Marine grade is optional but not required.
Wet Sounds makes a really good 6.5" but it may not be efficient enough to be powered by a head unit. You didn't mention what you have, but I can probably already tell you it's not enough. Most head units aren't. |

Serge33, I personally own a 2005 Glastron gx205, boat with the same motor, and outdrive.
My boat came originally with a Clarion XMD3 radio, with a built in amp, powering 4 Clarion speakers. Is that the kind of speakers you have? I would think that your head unit is most likely a Clarion 4. or 5 unit?
My stock stereo, didn't sound too bad, but I'll agree with jonyb, that I doubt if you will get much gain at all just changing speakers of any brand.
If you don't want to spend a lot of money, you could possibly just add a four channel amp to power your stock speakers, and then add a subwoofer, that could also hook up to the amp, and that would make a noticeable difference without a lot of time and effort. |

Thanks for your replies!
The boat came with a Jensen head unit.
I would install the amp along with a sub and a few more speakers, but I wouldn't handle the wiring, etc. And there's no one I know who'd do that for me; so I just would like (for now) to buy the best speakers that would fit the standard holes. |
