http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/sarah-palin/7302918/Bristol-Palin-to-star-in-teen-pregnancy-TV-drama.html

she's "starring" in a teenage drama about teen pregnancy?

man, why the hell would you do that? Wait, it seems it's just one episode.

What I found somewhat unsettling is this:

Quote:
Her pregnancy was an awkward moment for Sarah Palin, a staunch conservative who supported teaching abstinence in public schools as a form of sex education. ...........Since giving birth, Bristol Palin has become increasingly outspoken , urging young Americans to abstain from having sexual intercourse to avoid becoming a teenage mother like herself.

Ok, let me get this straight... your mom was the GOVERNER and an advocate for abstinence... yet somehow YOU found it difficult to abstain and got pregnant... yet she still thinks this is a realistic alternative to also teaching kids about proper birth control? Really? head, meet wall.

*GOVERNOR

But yes, I agree 100000000%
High school health programs can only get funding from the government if they teach 'abstinence only' programs. Maybe that should be re-thought too...

I 'abstinence only' really education? Are there programs that really only teach abstinence and not contraception? I went to a private Christian school and our sex ed program really pushed abstinence, but they taught us about the different types of contraceptives and how effective they were. Every kid knows that they won't get anyone pregnant or an STD by abstaining from sex.

idk. I think it depends on the school district. I think it's more an issue that some communities are ok with teaching ONLY abstinence, feeling that it is wrong to teach kids about forms of birth control or std protection.

though I can't really understand this thought process, I think that they feel that if you let kids know that condoms can relatively protect them from pregnancy and STDs, then they will think it is a free for all to F^ck each other silly.

Or that the family and parents should be in charge of teaching kids that stuff.

Or that if you teach abstinence only, then there would be no need to teach about contraceptives, because somehow being told not to have sex trumps a million years of evolution. idk.

This

They truly believe this theory and I have spoken with some local church leaders who have this belief. They really push our school system to go to abstinence only. Funny thing is at least three chics that I hooked up with in high school were part of their little WWF (worth waiting for) deal where they sign a swear that they will save it for marriage. Liars.

The first thing I thought when I read this title was:

"She's gonna be a porn star?" Confused

And then I thought that standards must be pretty low in Chatsworth these days...

Man, I went through Catholic school K-12 and they taught us how to put a condom on by the 6th grade. Not saying Catholic school has it right, but seems like they do have a better sex ed program than public schools.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1423677120070414

Just one of the articles I found about it... there are TONS more.

It's a very large debate over what should and should not be taught to students that attend public schools. If a school does not follow the government's policy for health classes, they do not get funding or they get substantially less funding.

"The report said the federal government has spent $87.5 million annually since 1998 for abstinence-only education programs."

Kind of like the war on drugs - NEVER GOING TO WORK!!! when are we going to wake up and demand change!!!!

"The vast majority of the public does not see abstinence and contraception as an either/or proposition -- they want teens to be informed of both," Sarah Brown, Executive Director of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, said in a statement.

And yet parents allowed our Government to do just that.

IMO public schools should stick to what they are supposed to be doing - TEACHING ACADEMICS!!!

sex - drugs - teen pregnancy has nothing to do with academics!

IMO that is the responsibility of the people that brought said child into the world.

Quote:
Teens in both groups were just as likely to use condoms or birth control, the report found -- countering the fears of critics of abstinence-only education, who say children ignorant of how to protect themselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases will simply have more unprotected sex.

That was from the article Aubs linked.

Interesting. However, I think that you cannot eliminate the effects of public service add campaigns and the fact that several groups worked really hard, independent of schools, to educate people about condoms and HIV/AIDS, etc.

I can't see any reason why to not teach abstinence. Abstinence ONLY, however, is foolish and dangerous, IMO.

J Dogg - But sex education is one part of Health in middle/high schools.

Camera - "foolish and dangerous" - well said.
