ttuclint, Very Happy enjoy it while you can. As long as Leach is your coach and the your offense remains a gimmick, this past season was the best you can EVER hope for. There's no where to go but down. Just sayin' Wink

eeven73, touche. 11 years...but who's counting Crying or Very sad

All I know is A&M is at least trying (and failing miserably) to climb back up into relevance, while Tech is busy bending over backwards for a kook that won't have the stars align like they did this past season ever again. Face it, even with how much better Tech has been than A&M in recent years, A&M is still a destination job, while Lubbock will always be a stepping stone--even for a head case like Leach.

eeven73, oh believe me, I know...all too well. That wasn't the point I was trying to make; admittedly I worded it poorly.

My point is, our coaches (even the good ones) aren't out trying to conduct secret interviews or keep their options open for better opportunities. Once they're here, they're going to stay until they retire or get fired. There's only 15-20 programs you can say that about. And they surely aren't going to refuse to sign an extension because it doesn't allow them to talk to other schools freely.

aggy being a destination job is highly debatable at this point. it has the tools and resources to be one, but you can't call a program a true destination job until they win on a regular basis. the fact of the matter is that no one has won enough there for anyone to ever want to hire the coach away.

bama is 10x the destination school aggy is and because of their jacked up situation, it was incredibly easy to snatch francakes away.

i wonder if anyone ever tried to hire rc away. he's the only coach from there i could see anyone trying to snake, but he was aggy through and through.

jt09, haha that's funny, I pondered for about 3 seconds for putting the fact that Fran left an elite, historic program for A&M into my post but knew you'd beat me upside the head with Alabama being on probation at the time and, well, Fran being a douchbag and all.

Mike Bellotti stepped down, and is going to be the new athletic Director.

Chip Kelley is now going to be HC at Oregon. This could be an epic year... Cool

A&M has the money, facilities, AD support, tradition, location, and fan support to be a destination job. And it certainly was when RC was forced out. The Fran hire cost us all of our momentum.

As long as all of those things remain, it will be a destination job again. It could just turn out to be 20 years from now until we can get the right guy in there. We'll see.

I don't think Sherman was a washout in the NFL. The Texans had a top 10 offense when he was the O-coordinator there his last year. He was on the way back up, IMO.

That's a pretty objective outlook actually. "Destination job" is obviously in the eye of the beholder. A&M certainly is for Sherman, hopefully there will be reciprocity there.

But if you look at the common thread of what most would consider destination schools, they are defined by "money, facilities, AD support, tradition, location, and fan support." Winning and current players on campus come and go every year. The destination jobs are the ones that coaches will stay at once they've built those things.

No one would doubt that OU, Texas, and LSU are destination jobs. But they were all pretty bad in the 90s. These things are cyclical.

You're trying to tell me A&M has the football tradition(read winning) of OU and UT. Up until 02 you could have argued LSU, but come on.

I'm ignorant.

Wow.

momentum?

99: 8-4
00: 7-5
01: 8-4
02: 6-6

as long as tx, ou and lsu are strong, a&m will never be a factor in the big picture. the only time a&m was ever consistently good, all 3 of those programs were down and a&m was cheating it's ass off.

Wakebrad wrote:

i think he meant "winning" tradition. not "things only a&m does and has done for years and years" tradition.

ou - 7 national championships, 42 conference titles, 5 heisman winners, 144 all americans.

ut - 4 national championships, 29 conference titles, 2 heisman winners, 120 all americans.

lsu - 3 national championships, 13 conference titles, 1 heisman winner, 55 all americans.

a&m - 1 national championship, 19 conference titles, 1 heisman winner, 41 all americans.

the only program a&m even comes close to in terms of winning, is lsu and lsu is through the roof right now.

jt09, I meant all the momentum gained through the 80s and 90s, when we dominated all of those teams.

I'm pretty sure I've seen stats by texas fans that show OU was cheating every time they won a NC. As for the cheating part, A&M did no worse than what OU did with Bomar, and got a slap on the wrist by the NCAA, followed by an apology for the slap.

Quote:

This is an invalid point. If A&M starts beating ou and texas regularly you could always say "well they weren't strong." A&M will win the Big XII South again (We were 1 point way from beating OU in 06 for it). Whether you want to classify texas and ou as "down" is irrelevant.

i'm not sure what your point is here. it's a fact that ou has never once won a mnc that was not followed by ncaa sanctions. it's also a fact that during the only sustained success in a&m football history, they were cheating their asses off. from the trans am that eric dickerson took from y'all and drove to smu (that's my favorite one), to the fed ex envelopes stuffed w/ cash mailed to recruits, to the fake jobs w/ boosters. i don't care what the penalties were or their harshness relative to the sanctions against ou, a&m was dirty as hell when they were winning.

invalid? we aren't talking "relatively strong" or "decent programs" we are talking top 5, mnc contenders. that means they are going to get all the talent. you are stuck in a catch 22 - how do you win w/ lesser talent to attract better talent so you can win more? now you have the added challenge of tech, okie lite and even baylor.

ahhh.....the offseason....

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

i have two thoughts on this statement:

1) top 10 w/i 3o years? that's your bar? well, hell yes i think you guys will reach the top 10 w/i 30 years. that's not exactly a lofty goal there man.

2) just get to the top 10? or finish a season in the top 10? because in the last 40 years, that's happened 6 times. none in the last 15 years. 76, 85, 87, 92, 93, 94.

same time frame, texas has 9, 5 in the last 9 years. ou has 7 in the last 10 years. lsu has 5 in the last 10 years.

i would think that a&m will finish in the top 10 w/i the next 30 years. will they ever get back to where they were 85-94? no.
