Just got news this morning that my 12 (13 next month) year old golden retriever, Sophie, has cancer in her spleen. I guess she hasn't eaten since Sunday and my dad got her an appointment at the vet this morning and we found out the news. They gave her steroids, which I'm hoping will help her out, but we'll soon find out. Otherwise they are putting her down.
We do have a couple of other dogs to play with though...my oldest siter lives right down the road and had two goldens, Kula and Maui. I can't get pictures of Maui recently, but here's a few of Kula...
She likes to fish

My roommate broke up with his girlfriend recently and she went to see this movie and called him sobbing and looking for comfort. He was none too compassionate, as you may imagine.
Any movie where a dog dies should be rated R. It's one of the worst things in the world. |

Dragonlady8, what makes you think any of us read anything that doesn't get posted here, with the important parts in bold? _________________

Thanks everyone.
She's not suffering too bad, she just won't eat. With her age, she can't see too well or hear too well and she has a little bit of a hard time getting around, but not too bad. I spoke with my dad and he said that the steroids are working but if they keep her on them, it will only be for a few weeks. He is probably going to put her down so she isn't miserable, which is going to be really tough when I hear about it. I'm getting teary eyed right now just typing this about her and it takes a lot for me to cry. |

I just burried my dog of 12 years two days ago. It was tough, she died of a tumor in her shoulder. She quit eating and just finally passed away. The saddest part was telling her goodbye.
Im so sorry to hear about your dog. I hope you guys get through it without too much sadness. |

While I agree, it was a really good movie. You should all at least read the book... it's way better than the movie. The book had me crying b/c I was laughing so hard, and crying b/c I was sad. The movie just had the sad... it wasn't as funny as the book.
I'm w/ 8824's view. We've got a 3 year old yellow (white) lab and we are dreading the day.
I'm sorry to hear about your pup. |

Talked to my dad a little bit ago and he had gotten back from the vet about 15 minutes before I called. He had to put her down since she had lost a lot of weight from not eating. My sister cooked up a bunch of soft foods and such to help her, but there was nothing she would do to eat. Lauren (my sister) said that she gave her one last goodbye and said that she smiled before she left . My little niece, Hallee, even gave her a kiss goodbye. She's only 1 1/2 so she doesn't quite understand, but still, kinda sweet.
It's hard talking on the phone to my dad when he's talking about Dale (kinda a family friend and also our vet) taking good care of her and about him holding her head and she got the shot. It's even harder listening to him crying a little bit as he says it. I held back my tears but it's still yet to really get to me. Once I go home again it's going to be brutal.
RIP Sophie. I'm gonna miss you

holdsworth, I'm sorry to hear that man, I know how you feel. My cat too has cancer. She has slept with me every night I have been home since 5th grade and I'm a sophomore in college now. She's ok for now, but I'm not going to be ok when she dies.
my condolences to you, and I hope you can enjoy what time there is left to be had. _________________ Keep Austin Weird |

holdsworth, impulse, sorry to hear about what you are going through. I know exactly how hard it is. In fact I'm tearing up right now with a big lump in my throat thinking about my golden lab mix that I lost last march. It was/is the hardest thing I've ever gone through. The loyalty and love a dog gives cannot be matched by anyone or anything.
I second dlady's suggestion to read the book. I read it in a weekend. Besides being a fast read, you don't want to put it down.
Karli

I'm sorry for your loss. But it's good that your dad kept up his end of the bargain we make with out dogs, that we will not let them suffer and that we'll do the right thing when it is time.
I'm so sorry man.
We lost a dog two years ago, ironically, the same way Marley in that book dies. No f'ing way in hell am I seeing that movie...
We have a cat that has massive tumors in his neck who is on prednisone. Thing is, I went to put him down, but he was playing with the vet, and walking around, and he's eating and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. So we put him on the steroid two weeks ago, but I think it's losing effectiveness, the tumors are swelling again, and I think that it will be time as soon as he seems uncomfortable or stops eatin.
man, sucks. again, I'm sorry. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |
