My parents friends started this foundation called Kakok which is based in Haiti. They have managed to get a school and hospital built by a Spanish company. The husband is a doctor and provides the medical skills and instructs others there on basic care. The wife helps at the school. I ha e decided to find a fun way to raise money for the organization by asking for bike part donations, rebuilding this old bike and then selling it and giving 100% of the money to the charity.
Here is the foundations page:

nice, different place though. This is actually a small island off the Coast of Haiti. What is great about it is that it was started by 2 regular individuals. No big corp looking to make a name for it's self, no religious group trying to spread their ideas, just two everyday people looking to give a little back. I applaud their efforts _________________ stay clean, like me

PimpinD2, I know a missionary on that island, if we're talking about the same one.
I went twice last year, and was planning on going back in Feb, but can't get the time off work. Hopefully in July! _________________ Impossible is not a a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

That's why you always go to a Travel medicine clinic a few months in advance to start on meds that are needed in those countries. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

DL8 - I've never gotten (too) sick going there.
Mind you, we drink bottled water, and I stay away from fruits or vegetables that are grown on the ground, such as melons.
I take a few pills before meals though -Vitamin C and Ecenasia (i think?) _________________ Impossible is not a a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

arof, doesn't matter. Always check with a travel medicine clinic before you travel to 3rd world countries... as recommended for US traveler.
There are medications - especially for malaria that need to be started a few weeks before travel.
It's too late to take them when you are leaving the next day. Plus you also want to get some medication that will help you when you do get sick during your stay.
Vitamins and herbal supplement are not going to cure malaria.
Here's a guideline from AAFP:

Hey - sure you all heard about the earthquakes there yesterday. Thought I'd give you an update on my friends there:
At the main campus that I visit, everyone is OK - it's probably 30 KM to the north of Port Au Prince. Some cracks in walls and windows blown out.
I have several friends in Port Au Prince - all but 2 of them are OK. THere is one of the administrators (a Haitian with an MDiv and MBA in the US) and his son are seriously injured. The house of another pastor in Port Au Prince that I know has collapsed but thankfully, no injuries or deaths.
Please pray for the people down there - this is the second major natural tragedy in just over 2 years. _________________ Impossible is not a a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

Really a big catastrophe for the people of in the area.. The prime minister says that around 100,000 people are dead.
I have been in the area and for this to happen to the extremely poor people is really really bad. My thoughts are with the people. Please all do what you can to help. _________________ WB.com will never be the same... You will never be forgotten Leggester.
