I recently installed a thru hull intake strainer fitting for my ballast system and wanted to make sure I installed the thru hull assembly correctly. Please review the link below and advise on which direction the assembly should go. I placed it so the scoop holes are closer to the rear of the boat? Can anyone tell me if this is correct or does it matter at all which way it is placed on the hull of boat?

the openings should face the front of the boat for intakes, but if you are using them for sacs it may keep trying to force water into the bags if the y fitting is not closed.... I would use a regular bulk head fitting... You should fill your sacs when still or at least a crawling pace, no need for a scoop style bulk head.....

you want the opening facing forward so it pulls water into your boat as you move. the nice thing about the scoop is that it will fill faster if you are idling rather than sitting still.

I've already installed it the other way and used 5200 silicone which basically means I can't change it. Will it work with the openings facing the rear or not?

It should work just fine as long as you aren't trying to fill the sacs while you're moving at any kind of speed. At a stand still or idle it should work like a charm. Sounds like you don't really have much of a choice any more anyways.

On the flip side, the sacs will drain a little faster if you are emptying them while you're moving.

At least it's unlikely to pick up weed in that position! (Unless you're taking Jim's advice and filling whilst in reverse). At Mach 2 you might find your sacs get automatically emptied by the suction from the rear facing vent but I think that's unlikely too. Unless, of course, your boat is fitted with one of those second-hand Concorde engines that are going cheap from British Airways and Air France.
