GPS Noob

Since this stuff is alway changing I was wondering what some of better portable gps's are out there. Any advice on what too look for/at brand etc. Not really for a daily driver thing so I dont need the top of the line just a decent reliable one.

Stick to Garmin.

I've tried a ton of different units from Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan. Even Pioneer.

Garmin does the best job IMO.

You can get a Nuvi 250 for less than $150

My recommendation would be to stick with either Tom-Tom or Garmin.

I purchased a Garmin 250 off of newegg and it works great and was pretty cheap.

I have a Tom-Tom and a Garmin. They both have ups and downs. I do perfer the Tom-Tom over the Garmin though. The Tom Tom is more customizable than the Garmin. I can choose voices or what is displayed on the main screen of the Tom-Tom, The Garmin is fixed and if you want additional info such as the total miles left in your trip you have to press a button for another screen. Also my Garmin runs about 50 yds slow.

The thing that the Tom-Tom lacks is the POI's for restaurants is not catagorized by food and it only looks in about a 5 mile radius.

Both are good units and either one will do a decent job.
