|

Okay.. So my speedo has been broken for a while now. When it first went, I was able to get it back with a lot of speed and it worked for a while. Then, it just finally wouldn't came back.
I disconnected the tube from the back of the speedo and blew it out with some compressed air. Reconnected it, still not working.
I tried to lightly blow some air into the speedo while the ingition was on to see if the diaphram was working, and it wouldn't register.
So, in the time being I'm gonna use my navigation unit for speed.
Do you think I should install a separate line for the new speedo, or use the potentially clogged one? _________________ just livin' man, just livin' |

I have no advice for you, but I haven't used a speedo in over 5 years. Unless you have PerfectPass, then I would fix it.
They just notoriously break on these kinds of boats. |

I hope you disconnected the tube from the back of the gauge before you blew it out with air. Compressed air will easily rupture the diaphram in the back of the airguide style gauges. Might also check the pitot tube itself. you may need to pick some gunk out of the intake with a paperclip or something. _________________ Long Island, NY & Canada Lake, NY (addirondacks)

it's on an i/o, so the pitot is a part of the stern drive unit itself and I can't discern where the pick up is for the speedo.. Looks like a new speedo diaphram or new unit is in order and I'll run it with my GPS for accuracy as well...
Is there anyway to take it out of the stern drive and put a conventional pitot on the back and keep it from forcing water into the boat? _________________ just livin' man, just livin' |

Sure, but you might have to run a new tube if the one thats there wont reach. Theyre pretty cheap too. _________________ Long Island, NY & Canada Lake, NY (addirondacks)

Two things normally cause this problem.
If there is an air leak in the tube towards the front of the boat, especially at the back of the speedo, water gets into the back of your speedo. This water either freezes and ruptures the diapraghm or it rusts it out.
Your symptom of having it work at high speeds for a while almost guarantees that one of these things happened.
You need a new speedo. When you replace it, cut half an inch or a little more off the hose to make it fit nicely. (get rid of the stretched bit which has been put over a fitting before). Use a zip tie or clamp to hold it on firmly and seal.
What type of speedo did you have? Let me know if you need an airguide.
Your hose etc you can reuse. |
