Durham, Richmond... ?

I wanted to move to Boston, but I got my current Director said she would hire me after my last semester but wouldnt let me me go any further north then Philly.

I was looking and we have a Richmond, VA and Durham, NC location
WHat are some of your opinons on the two? I think im leaning more towards the Durham location right now what do you all think?

If you don't care about being closer to the DC area and don't have other ties to VA, I'd go with Durham. I know VA has state income taxes, does NC?

Not sure about riding spots in Durham, but in Richmond you're no more than 45 minutes away from 2 great riding spots, Lake Anna and the Chickahominy River (less depending on which side of the city you live in). The folks at Glass & Powder Boardshop take good care of riders in the Richmond area.

Richmond's a pretty liveable city. I don't think its great if you're young and single, but its what you make of it. Definitely a nice place to settle down and raise a family comfortably.

I've not heard good things about Durham. I know most of the Dukies make the trip to Chapel Hill for their nightlife.

Durham's a pretty bad place as far as crimes go, but it's around some very nice areas like chapel hill and raleigh. Falls lake is about 30 minutes away and located here in raleigh, but water levels can drop severely making it hazardous for any boating activities... then there's lake gaston about an hour and a half north right on the NC/VA border that's a great place to ride on weekdays.

I'd go with Richmond, like Lindsay said there are some great places to ride close by, plus 'wake n skate' is located there. Absolutely zero boardshops here in the raleigh-durham area.

Was it Virginia that has those new traffic violation laws, that you had to pay the fines for the 3 yrs they stayed on your record?
Someone had posted it on this forum about a year ago.

yeah, i starting digging deeper inthe city data nad durham seems to be not a place i really want to be. It doesnt seem like anything is there and crime seemed pretty high ( Mind you Im comign from a small rural area)

As for Richmond i saw it was rated like 15 on most dangerous city list.. but again seemed a bit boring. I am young (23) and recently single and Im not a binge drinking or looking for night clubs when I say it seems boring.. things like sporting events (other than nascar) golfing etc..

As of right not I ruled out Durham, and a few of your comments spraked Richmond again.. or I may just stay in Pittsburgh where I am located now, just a different office

Lots of smaller cities within 30 minutes minutes of Durham. Search Triangle and Triad. Many smaller, "safer" cities within a minute commute.

I'm in RVA. Richmond is alright, several rivers and lakes in the area. I'm in the south Richmond area close to Lake Chesdin, which is pretty low right now. The James river runs right through Richmond as well, enter at your own risk though. There are tons of golf courses. But this city does not attract good music venues or have any major sporting teams. Parts of the city are super sketchy (daily murders), parts are nice as it gets. No worse that Pittsburg.

Raleigh is a very nice place.

Personal property taxes are killer here, especially on a boat. Several thousand a year for a new boat. PP taxes on houses, cars, boat, etc.

Raleigh's pretty nice. Thats where I live. This area (Raleigh/Durham) is one of the best places to live and work in the US. For riding its not bad. We have a few lakes within 30-45 mins and some real nice ones within a few hours.

Dont know much about Richmond, but just to clear some stuff up, Glass and Powder boardshop just went out of business and Wake and Skate board shop is about 3 hours away at Smith Mtn. Lake, VA, not in Richmond. So now Richmond is just as boardshop-less as Raleigh I believe.

Its not so much what there is to do in Ralieigh. Three big colleges in the area. Lots of girls. A few lakes, 1 1/2 hours to Wilmington all interstate. Ton of chicks there. 3 hours to snowboarding shitty mountains, or a couple more to snowshoe for a decent mountain. If you are considering richmond or durham, I would go raleigh all the way.
