I recently took up wakeboarding with a friend and my son. I bought a 2005 Obrien Valhalla. It comes with 4 fins that go on the 4 corners. Should we be using them or not when we are learning.
I tried searching the threads, but couldn't find any previous discussion on this matter.

ps This sport is addictive.

There's a ton of posts around here regarding riding with fins or not....there's one a few posts down from this one in fact. do a search for "finless" or something to that like. The general consensus is no fins...teaches you better edging. I agree.

I think you should take them off, but ONLY if the board has some other kind of built-in fin. Otherwise, you won't be very stable AT ALL.

valhalla, I would just leave them on. The Valhalla already has molded fins anyways, and the only time the extra fins really bite into the water is if you're doing a hard edge in anyways. Removing them is not going to make much difference because you won't really be fully utilizing them until you are edging properly anyways.

If it were any other board, I would say to leave the fins on until you get comfortable riding around, then take them off and see how you like it. It's all personal preference anyways...

Take them off at the lake and ride the board. If you prefer it leave them off and if not put them back on.

Thanks everyone, we will try with side fins on/off/middle fins on/off and see what we like, right now just trying to get over body pain from a weekend of face plants and ass crackers.
