When I went to the Mayan ruins in May I asked the tour guide about 2012 and he explained it to me.

Basically they started keeping track of time way into the past (kind of like we did with AD/BC). They tallied way into the future. The Calendar was everything to them. They did not want to have any duplicate days identified. The reason they stopped at 2012 was it was a natural stopping point in their count.

Say you were numbering to 1,000,000. If you stopped at 999,999 you wouldn't have to add that extra digit. When you are tallying these things out, an extra digit is a more significant effort.

I don't know any Mayans....I guess that says something. If the world was gonna end, it probably would've happened before Favre became a NY Jet. I'd say we're safe.
