Who will you be there with? SA is a pretty cool place but most of it is group activities. My wife is from SA so we've spent a lot of time there.

Wakebrad, rollin' solo. so i won't have to worry about a group all wanting to do the same thing.

Jt, would love to go to austin, but its a bit of a drive and since i don't know my way around, i think ill have to hold off. Plus that pic of you with that mustashe was pretty gnarly, i better not chance running into someone sporting something similar up there. so i'll keep my distance.

savage Doubt ill see daylight too much.

So someone else here at the ole' j-o-b mentioned the RiverWalk? said there are resturants and Bars? this true? if so are they good bars?

Junkee, Where are you staying? Depending on what part of town you're in I have plenty of recommendations.

Riverwalk is cool if you've never been before. Lots of bars/restaurants all over. It's the touristy thing to do if you're staying downtown.

lol about mustaches...

The only decent stuff to do in SA is touristy crap. Riverwalk is just a ton of restaurants and bars along the SA River. It's about as good as you are going to get. If you are alone and only have 1 night, that's your best bet. Wouldn't worry about scouting for individual bars being better than any others - just walk from one end to the other and walk into the one that looks good. You might get lucky and find a group of schoolteachers or something as there are a TON of conventions there all the time.

ill be in the downtown area. huebner and the I-10 roughly.

the riverwalk is about 10 minutes away i guess. wouldnt mind the school teachers convention showing up, will have to keep an eye out for that.

plus i hear the alamo is down there, may as well check the basement for any stolen bikes....

I work about a block away from I-10 & heubner. That's actually a little drive from downtown. If you're a beer drinker, hit up Flying Saucer right there off of Heubner. Tons of good brew on tap...and hot waitresses in short skirts Wink

What business are you in?

OK, first off, a good way to get your ass kicked here is add "the" to the beginning of any street name. Its just I-10, 10, or the Interstate.

The Riverwalk will suit your needs perfectly. It is touristy, but fun nonetheless. It is really scenic looking area, just dont look directly in the water.

The Flying Saucer is pretty good and it's literally right where you said you will be (I-10 and Huebner, which is probably 20 minutes from downtown...) when you're there, try the Live Oak Heff or the Pilsner, it's brewed in Austin and they make some good stuff

MUCH better idea than the Riverwalk. I've heard nothing but great reviews of this place. Assload of beer on tap. 70+? Something ridiculous, whatever the number. Grab a cab to the Riverwalk if the talent lacks. I doubt it will lack though. Even if SA is at the lower end of cities in TX I like to go out, it's still better than most places and if you're white, male and can put a couple of complete sentences together, you can do well.

J! Don't be saying shlt like that! Laughing Laughing

No one's going to kick your ass, but they will look at you really funny. My sister does that adding the "the" from her time in CA and it always makes me chuckle. I lol'd when I saw it in your post.

Some decent titty bars in SA as well if that's your thing.

Last time I was there, stayed at a hotel on the Riverwalk. Was a pretty decent time.

If the Flying Saucer in SA is like the one in Houston, I'd agree with atolman, the place is great.

Hit up TSR if you get a chance. It's a good 30 minutes outside the city depending where you are but well worth it. It's a cool place to hang out by yourself.

Get some Texmex at the riverwalk.

Oh! If you like Mexican food at all, you need to go eat at Mi Tierra downtown. It's the sh*t. Ask anyone where it is, it's a landmark.

If you're going to be around Hueb/10 I'm with atolman. Stop in the flying saucer, good beer, cute waitresses...you really can't ask for more. If you want to get mexican food while you're here I HIGHLY suggest you make a quick trip out to helotes and stop at El Chaparral, if you're in the mood for a burger then you have to stop at Chris Madrid's. Its by far the best burger place I've ever eaten at. (both places have been around for ages) You're also going to be really close to The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim, both of which are big shopping places if for some reason you feel the need to do that sort of thing. Though there is very little in the way of wakeboard shopping out there.

atolman, where do you work?

Junkee and I are in the same boat (sort of). I'll be there at the beginning of March (6-Cool for a business seminar. Staying at the Omni on the River Walk. Odds are I'll be locked into that area without a rental car or anything.

I can't wait to tell my wife there might be a schoolteachers' convention! Evil or Very Mad

Jason SSR i did not mean to offend, should i have said "Thee" I-10? Laughing here in Az its just simply called 'the 10' as in "take the 10 to Van buren, go right, Le Girls is on the left"

Atolman I work for the big company across the,...wait, no the..across I-10 from you. to not name names',...the Military's Financial provider.

Flying Saucer sounds good to me. I appreciate all the suggestions. Although am curious why i shouldn't look directly in the water at riverwalk...

Junkee, JT's right, Mi Tierra is amazing... they've been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since the early 1940s... really good food, and the best coffee I've ever drank... breakfast tacos at 2 am are a good thing.

If you want a pretty good Tex Mex place that's right next to where you are, go to the Alamo Cafe.

Exactly! Its not really a river, more like a manmade ditch with no naturally running water. So its stagnant water being recirculated only being filled/drained to keep constant level. Basically, on the sanitary ladder it is one rung below raw sewage. Ive seen drunks fall in....its not pretty.

about San Antonio..

Expect to see people driving in the left lane going 55 on "the" I-10.
"the" I10 goes North/South, even though its marked East/West.
Loop 410 sucks. Avoid it like the plague. Well, unless you like consuelo in his '78 cutlass thats dragging its bumper swerving into your lane, while he's trying to get to the job site.
Speaking of titties and 410, the farther south from Northern loop 410 you go, so does the quality of the titty bars. If you make it to the south part of the loop, bring your drysuit.

Riverwalk- if you're staying down there, its the stuff. Dont bother trying to drive out there, especially with all the drunks on Friday/Sat night. If you do go, be sure and hit up howl at the moon. You wont regret it. If you dig that atmosphere, hit up dirty nellie's... its an irish pub w/ a pianist in the middle. You cant miss all the peanut shells on the floor. Also, try Pat O'briens on the river walk. For a more chill atmosphere try Swig- its right next to Howl at the moon.

North Side-If you're looking to get in a fight, hit up Rebar on broadway, just inside 410, and try ordering a drink from the ASSistant manager. Across the street is rev room, Karma, and a tequila bar that I'm not familiar with. If you want to find some higher class ladies, hit up stoneworks at stone oak and 1604. Also, try Silo (between Blanco and Stone Oak, on the inside of 1604).

Ruune, where in San Antonio are you from? My parents literally live on Stone Oak & 1604 (one of the Sonterra neighborhoods)...

Dirty Nellie's is kickass though, that's the only bar on the Riverwalk that I really like that I've been to more than once. The Piano man always makes for a good time

Ok, so i made it to and from San Antonio. As Jason SSR said the use of the word 'the' in front of an freeway number or street name will not get you any good looks. The person that picked me up from the airport confirmed it. I told him that we people of arizona refer to it as "the 10". I recieved quite a glare on that one. I told him that it was, as far as i know, proper grammar to put the word 'the' in front of an object such as I-10. but he did not agree and we moved on.

So after all of the insight and recommendations you all made this is waht i did. I know you don't care but i am bored and going to tell you. Cause that is what the internet is for.

I went to the following places.

Rudy's Bar-B-Que. It was here i realized what Jt had mantioned about the difference between Grilling and BBQ. Best brisket i have had, and the creamed corn waspretty good too. i also was able to witness a true backwoods texan at this place. and backwoods is not my term but that of the person, a native, who took me to rudy's.

Texas Land and Cattle. I dont know if this is your premier steak house. seemed like a chain. but they had some good steak. also the wait staff was nice. Very Happy

I did go to the Flying Saucer. What a mad house. I guess it was pint night and there was a frenzy in the air for Guinness #3 and the glass it came in. The short skirts and hot waitresses were a nice touch. kinda hard to pull tail when you roll up in a company owned Ford Taurus though. Confused

Few things that i found interesting. The GIANT pair of cowboy boots sculpture off of, i believe, [the]410 freeway. Not as many giant belt buckles as TV/Movies had lead me to believe in the state of Texas. Also, the accent wasn't to prevalent. however, y'all was.

Over all it was a quick trip, it was fun. too bad it was rainy on thursday. but its good to be home where i can say "the 10" without worrying about a fist in the face.
