I did some math last night on trading in my truck. I get about 14mpg and drive about 20K miles a year, which means I'll spend about $5700 in gas over 12 months. If I got a car that gets 25mpg I'll spend $3200 driving the same distance. The difference of $2500 is a lot of money ($208/month), but it's less than I'd spend getting a suitable (but less capable) vehicle. The truck is paid for and has been bullet-proof for the last five years. Even though the mileage is below par, I really don't want to pick up a car payment. I've decided to keep it for at least another 50K miles.

That said, if I was going to trade in, the Civic would be on the list of test-drives along with the Focus, BMW 128, and the small VWs.

riverfreak Accord 4 door. The accord will have a little bit more head room and trunk space. If you find one w/ a 4 cylinder engine you'll get the same gas mileage as the civic, but the 6 cylinder engine sucks in the city. I'm lucky to get 24 in the city w/ mine.[/b]

The truck gets about 14mpg - so we've figured a gas savings around $200 - $300/ month

husband is an appraiser so - the coupe would be fine

thats a savings of around $3000/year

+ going out of town or road trip would be so much more economical - we really think twice about just hitting the road - at 14mpg

We were getting 31-32 with the Jetta during our trip to Vegas (air on, fully loaded, 75mph). The Miata gets about the same top down and a bit more top up.

I have no complaints about ditching the SUV - especially glad we did it over a year ago while some value still existed for it.

I really can't wait for some of the awesome small Euro cars to make their way over here. Mazda2/Fiesta FTW!

My 'rents just bought this in Black Sapphire Metallic:

haugy,

My parents company has a late 70s ford fiesta. It is lime green, (called the limon) The last time I drove it was five years ago, it had over 200K miles on it and still gets over 35mpg, it still runs strong (well as strong as it ever did)

As economists.. they believe in buying the best deal, and running it into the ground. They also have this bike for around town deliveries an errands.

What's the saying about your friends seeing you ride a moped? Same thing applies...

chavez, no.... no.... no... NO! haha

You do not want the Fiesta or the Mazda 2... they are horrible cars. Frugal and economical yes... a pleasant place to be? Hell no. My brother uses a 2005 as a company pool car and its awful.. truly cheap and naff.

The Volvo C30... now that's a cool car! Cool
