Im thinking about adding a hot water hose to fill up our wetsuits before jumping into the 50* water this coming weekend. I havnt seen the boat since last year, but if I recall, there were 1/2 or 5/8 fittings on the top or front of the exhaust manifolds. Would you think I could pull warm enough water from there? I cant really get to the plug at the bottom of the block since its an I/O.

Id really like to be able to at least drip some hot water into a bottle that we can fill between sets so we can try and brave the cold this weekend. Eventually Ill invest in a mixer and an on-demand pump to have a more permanent solution.

There's way better ways of getting hot water than that... are you running a Volvo Penta? There pumps run the wrong way (compared to other boats). so technically you could attach a bit of heater hose ($10) to a sea I'm an idiot ($5) and simply plug it into the main water pump ont he front of the engine. This'll get you as much hot water as you could possibly deal with....

Yes, it is a volvo penta 4.3L GM block. So youre saying the water pump pulls hot water? I think the forum's language filter caught the $5 item you specified, so im not sure what you meant. Anyway, Ill check it out, and if the water pump is indeed hot, It should be pretty easy to rig something up. Thanks!

haha yeah you can't say c*ck... i Meant to say seac0ck.

The water pump is hot, you just take out the plug on the top, you'll then need to take this to your local plumbers supply and find a hollow version with a barbed fitting end. Volvo sell this a s a hot water take off kit.. but its very very $$$$ - over $100!

You guys do realize that you're talking about using 140+ degree water on your sack, right? Think that's a good idea? Shocked

LOL

I gotta believe that cold water is a lot easier to get to. Im thinking of using a regular garden hose Y splitter as a mixer to get some cold water in there too.

Thanks for the posts guys.

pet575, haha yes, but he wanted a cheap solution to access hot water. I'm not suggesting he uses this to shower in, it'd need mixing, but would be the cheapest source of hot water available.

You need to get a hot water shower so that you can get the proper mix of hot water vs cold. They're not that expensive and come with everything you need.

Well, Im trying to do a true DIY from scratch shower. The hot water was just the biggest question.

I do plan on using a mixer in order to regulate the temperature, as soon as I can take a look at what im dealing with. The boat is 4 hours away and I have not seen it since last season.

I build a shower, with pump over the winter for about $120.

An even cheaper method would be filling up a cooler with hot water.

GuitsBoy, for cold water you should be able to take a feed from the intake manifold. won't be under much pressure but should be sufficient. so you could tap in there with a seac0ck, tap into the circulation water pump, then bring the tubes together with a y piece.... shoudl be doable for under $50 inc all hardware. add more if you find you need a pump. heatercraft.com do some parts that may be useful. but they also do cheap showers that may be worth checking out.

Here's what I did - T'd into the raw water hose after the pump (for a cold water source). Replaced on of the drain plugs on the engine with screw in hose fitting (don't know how else to describe it) for a hot water source. Those two fittings go into a garden hose "Y" connector so you can adjust the mix/temp. A hose on the other end of the "Y" connector with on/off valve at the end of the hose. We use it to fill a bucket with hot water for foot and wetsuit warming. Probably cost around $20. Let me know if you need any specifics.

Actually I wound up doing something pretty similar...

I used a 3/4" OD threaded to 3/8 barbed adapter hooked into the waterpump, which pumps hot water.

I put a 3/8 OD threaded to 3/8 barbed adapter into the thermostat housing to get my cold water.

I cut a single washing machine hookup hose and attached the cut ends to the barbs and the threaded fittings to the garden hose Y mixer.

From there, I just needed a 1" threaded male to male adapter, a short garden hose, and a nozzle.

It worked pretty well. Water pressure was pretty good if we tached the boat up above 1500 RPM in idle. Mixing was a little challenging since it takes a long time to get the water through the hose to gauge the effects of your adjustment, but we started getting a feel for it by the end of the weekend.

All in all, it was probably about 40 dollars in parts. I actually spent about double that cause I didnt know what I would actually need until I got to the boat on saturday, and so I bought a ton of unused parts.

Next step is hooking up a thinner hose to get the water through more quickly, and possibly an on demand pump off of ebay.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELPFUL ADVICE GUYS!!!!
