I just recently got to wakesurf for the first time. The guy had what I guess was an official wakesurf rope. It was short and was a thick rope with knots every foot or so. This allowed you to pop up about 5 feet further back than you wanted to be, and then hand over hand pull yourself into the wake. I am no expert since I only have done it once, but it seemed easier if you quickly pulled yourself into the wake before the wave really got established. Those that waited too long struggled to get over the big foam pile. But then again we were all a bunch of noobs.
