Haugy - I live in Raleigh as well. The worst cities were listed first, so the Triangle is actually the least drunk. _________________

I wonder if altitude has anything to do it? Doesn't that factor into the effects of alcohol on the system?
That could be reason why Colorado and especially Denver ranked so poorly. _________________ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The ranking seems a bit counter-intuitive. Denver is dubbed "Most Dangerously Drunk," but we're ranked 100th.
In any case: WOOHOO! WE'RE NUMBER 1! |

| NYC is in the top ten least drunk because of the public transportation system, if every city had subways, nobody would ever drive drunk |

Our bars are open until 4 AM and there is nothing else to do.
How late are other cities bars open? I know Milwaukee used to be 1 AM when I lived there. Charlotte was 1 AM as well. |

Because the list sucks. I mean how can you go from very worst to very best with just 100 cities? Just pick them out of a hat and give it a rank? wtf
I agree with whoever said it is about the winters too... A good list would have 19 out of the top 20 a bunch of midwestern state cities, Alaska cities, Colorodo cities, etc.
EDIT: I did some digging around and found some comments/complaints from a separate site about the list...
JasonOT wrote:
Could this article be any more poorly written, or have used any worse methodology? Let's go down the list of problems:
1. "The Sobbering Truth" Honestly, how much do you pay your editors? There's one 'b' in sobering.
2. "How Our Formula Works" Your explanation and what actually shows up on the map don't jive. "So a city ranked No. 92 for DUI has fewer drunk-driving arrests each year than a city ranked No. 3." Sorry, no it doesn't. According to the map, lower is better across the board.
3. Factoring in DUI arrests without any other tertiary data. Boston ranks 10th in DUI arrests, Las Vegas 98th. Despite how your formula "works" the map would indicate this means Boston has considerably fewer arrests than Vegas. But what does that even mean? Without additional data, it's bad science to draw any conclusions. It could just as easily mean the police in Vegas are simply more vigilant than police in Boston, as it could mean there are more drunk drivers in Vegas than in Boston.
4. Though not specifically stated, given the awful methodology everywhere else, there's a good chance your "percentage of fatal accidents involving intoxicated motorists" from the USDOT is more likely the number of alcohol related deaths, which also includes intoxicated pedestrians killed by sober motorists. Not really here nor there, and it does still factor into how drunk a city is, but it is just another point in how poorly researched and written this article is.
5. The validity of anything MADD has to say should be taken with a large grain of salt. Candy Lightner, the founder of MADD, left the organization because it had become a "neo-prohibitionist" organization, rather than one actually concerned with saving lives. The mere fact that Boston is ranked 98 in laws, yet 10 and 28 in DUI and deaths respectively is rather telling of MADD's poor interpretation of the strength of laws. Or take the inverse, of Raleigh, NC being ranked among the best in law (13) yet rather poorly in DUI (80) and deaths (50). If the purported strength of laws were legitimate, there would be a correlation to at least the number of deaths, if not also the number of DUI arrests.
EDIT #2: Did some more digging, now these lists actually make a little more sense:

haugy, Ill be the d!ck of the hour (some people around here are actually adamant about this ) but Raleigh=/=Durham. Raleigh was #24, Durham was #1. Seems like the whole country thinks its one city but I live in Raleigh and it takes a solid 30-45 mins to get to Durham and there is a clear difference. Whatever, our airport is called Raleigh-Durham (its between the two) so I guess thats the reason.
But yea that list seems almost as ridiculous as the Rolling Stones Top 100 guitarists list. |
