It's hard to know exactly how high you are until you try to ollie over something. The main point of reference I have is I love ollying no wake buoys. I'd guess those are about waist high. 3-3.5 ft or so.
Practice your ollies until you're comfortable with them and then try to clear obstacles. Just make sure you don't do it in chop or you might hit a dip and then slam into it. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

the good guys can ollie over a bouy no problem.
heres me attempting an ollie. im a newb not even jumping wake to wake yet. i have horrible form and no clue what im doing. but the pictures of me ollieing always suprise me, it doesnt feel like im that high out of the water in real life.
however you can see im cheating alot, nose is way high and knees in my chest.

i ollied over a buoy the other day while riding. it was poking up about 2 feet and i cleared it by about 8 inches or so.
the key to ollying is the pump. bounce, without jumping, on the water to get an extra push for when you do your ollie. this helps a lot rather than just jumping. think of a trampoline, if the surface is moving up and down from you pumping your knees and you go for the bounce, you go a lot higher. |

Thanks.
To me the rocking motion is the biggest part. You can't just jump like you would off the ground because the board sticks to the water. You want to rock back on your tail and then pop off your tail. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

If you edge out and ollie while you still have speed, you can get a lot better push off the water cause it's harder. I could ollie BS180 the cheesewedge at o-dub (3 ft) cleanly, but i had to cut at it like I was gonna actually hit it. _________________

| Its not that he ollies on edge, he just edges out hard first to get speed and effectively make the water harder so that he can get more power back out of his ollie. His description of how to ollie isn't exactly what he does. Watch him, he levels off before he actually ollies. |

Aaron Reed (nice name-drop, I know ) said that the best way to improve your ollie skills is to practice actually ollie-ing over objects. An anchored empy milk jug would be a good starting point

I could ollie FS 180 over the blue barrel at o-dub cleanly. _________________ Hilton Head Wake Sports.com

thanks for all the feedback.
didn't realize it was easier outside of the wake. i've always done mine inside the wake.
been boarding for about 2 seasons. tried to learn too quick. will be going back learning the basics before i start working on more pop.
don't get too go that often, and when i do i'm with the fam so my time is limited. but last time out was about a 20 min run with nothing but surface 180's and riding 90% switch. switch is getting a little easier. still squirrelly when i really try to dig in and edge. |
