I have been using Windows Movie Maker.

Is there anything I can download for free that is better?

Try to find a program called Avid freedv. It has been discontinued by avid but their site still maintains support for it. It was a slimmed down version of their professional software and their answer to Apples Imovie and it was free. Great program if you can find it. Try a search on google.
