Alrite, I've been playin' ball lately and I finally can dunk.. so I've been playing around a lot trying to do different variations and stuff... but I'm absolutely KILLING my hands on the rim! My middle finger is getting ripped up like mad from the impact of my hand on the metal. I was just wondering if anyone else plays ball and can dunk, and if so is there anything you do to keep your hands/fingers from getting all raw? I think I'm gonna tape my middle finger from now on, or try to get some finger-bands like Iverson wears... Anyone have some input???

Like I said before, I can dunk... it's just not on a ten foot goal. I think it's nine feet.

Yea man, seriously! Please only post a reply if you can dunk on a full-sized net! Wink Smile
J/k... it's really weird, 'cause some days I'm totally in the 'zone' and can do reverses, alley-oops and jumping over people, then other days I can barely put it down normally... Guess that's where my white-background comes into play! Mad lol

Yea I envy my brothas from another mutha! Just wish I still played league ball so I could throw down over one of them! lol.... or at least get swatted by one of them!

Man, a couple years ago when I was in a league game I was a jr on the sr team and we were playing a "from the ghetto" team. They had this monstrous center (not that tall (6'3" probably) but RIPPED)... so before the game I was pretty worried about his game, but once we started playing he was pretty crappy, wasn't hustling at all. So in the fourth quarter he got the ball down low and I was matching up against him. I said to myself "alrite, this guy doesn't hustle. I'm gonna block him so bad!"..... Embarassed bad call on my part! He fully two-handed over me HARD.... I felt like the biggest, most naive white-boy on the floor Laughing

I can usually dunk...it just depends if my legs are feeling right. I found taking a 2-3 day break from doing much running/jumping can really help you get much higher than usual, and I can usually get my whole hand above the rim because of the rest. I only have dunked once in a game, in a league at my work. We were losing like 25-100 and there was like ten seconds left and the guy guarding me felt sorry for us I guess and let me drive by him... Smile

For you fingers, I have no idea how to get rid of the pain or to prevent it in the future other than to just keep dunking and wait for some callouses to develop. It definately sucks to have your fingers hurt like that.

Do you guys do anything to improve your vertical? I'm thinking about doing that this summer. What do you find works well?

I used to be able to jump but I haven't done any land sports in 6 years so my jumping ability is shot.

Jello John, do power lifts like squats, deadlifts, and power cleans. Use like 75% of your max and explode with the lifts. On the squats and power cleans explode up onto your toes. Also Plyometrics will help a lot. Limit yourself to 25 contacts (reps) when you first start plyo. You should research plyo before doing it. There are some consequences (shin splints and other injuries) if you do it wrong or too hard when begining.

Yeah boy, sweet post. Now that I'm 24, I've been able to dunk for over 9 years! Shocked It's all been downhill though since I was about 17 I think.

For the torn fingers thing...stop hanging on the rim or pulling on it! Mr. Green Once you get jumping a little higher, you'll be able to throw down and just hit your wrist on the hoop, which is always fun cause you get these weird red lines on your wrist (broken blood vessels maybe?) that show exactly where you hit the rim at, then you can show that action to the ladies and they'll rub it for you cause it looks like it hurts and then....well ya know. Laughing

Im 6'6" and played ball in college. What you have is rim rot! When you first start dunking you get it alot. As you start jumping higher you will not hit that knuckle as much. Just tape it up for the time being.

In school we used the SuperCat. It makes your vert skyrocket! I have one in my garage. Hard to get ahold of, but the owner of the company's son was on my college team so i got the hookup. In school my vert was up to 39". In fact, I have a nasty scar above my elbow where I stuck my arm trough the hoop like Vince, and one of the net hooks came unwelded and stuck in my arm during a Pro-Am game 2 years ago(my last yr of college was '96). Got an ambulance ride for that one...

OK... Time to put an end to this madness. I think some people on here are fibbing. 360's and reverses? Shananigans...

You may be telling the truth but it's hard to believe. NBA guys at the same height and with much more athletic ability aren't throwing down like that so it just makes these claims a little out of control.

I'm 19 5'11 and can dunk. Not all the time though. But we play ball down at 'The Hick' there goals are nine foot tall at both ends. We play full court and have the best times ever. Me playing on a 9ft hoop is like the pros playing on a 10 foot hoop. I can throw down fully extended windmills and 360s. Also got some sick moves to embarass people. If anyone in the orlando area dont believe me come down to St. Cloud and ill show you im not lieing.

Reverses and 360s are easy. Try doing a reverse where you bring the ball down and touch your feet with it then punch it.

Nor*Cal - I'm pretty sure that most of the NBA players who are around 6' can dunk, but they just don't in the games. Look at friggin Spud Webb man, 5'7" or whatever and won the dunk competition.

I find it easier to dunk with 2 hands. I have relatively small hands so it's hard for my palm the ball sometimes... And when I say I can reverse it's only if I'm having a good day. Most of the time I just get rejected by the rim Laughing I wouldn't even come close to doing a 360, so I don't even bother.

Jason - One of the HS teams we played against had a 6'10" center. He was a really good ball player - made our center look like a fool. I read in the newspaper last year that he was in practice fooling around, went up for a dunk and hit his head on either the rim or backboard and cracked his skull open. Fortunately for him he's back playing and he just got a scholarship down south.

~Da_Maestro~, I never said they couldn't dunk... I stated that the claim of 360's and reverses is a little outlandish.

Once I rest up my legs for a couple days to get rid of my shin splints I'll get some footage and upload it.... Again I'm not saying I can 360... I too find that a bit hard to believe, but hey, some people just got skills!

Try to locate a SuperCat ( www.powernetics.com ) and get on it regularly. You will be surprised how much vert you will get. All the NBA, NFL, and MLB teams have a couple and most NCAA teams as well. It also increases your 40 time.

Yeah he probably hit the backboard. It used to be a big problem, thats why college boards are higher than HS. I busted my head open a few times before I learned to duck or push off with one hand.
