Ryan Shimabukuro, on the other site, is from Hawaii but lives stateside now. He still has family there and I believe his brother runs a wake school on the Islands. He rides every time he goes back....
If you are looking to ride, you may contact him if you don't get some love here.

Why in the world would you wakeboard in HI? You have the best surf breaks in the world.
I would be getting on a surf board son!

8824, I've only been to HI once so I prob don't know what I'm talking about. But I'm assuming the best surf breaks are off limits for tourists. Hence why I was hitting the little waves outside the resort.

That is correct. However, if you hire a local to take you out he will make sure you don't get pummeled too badly.
If you decide to go without a local guide/instructor, stick to a break with a life guard. That way you should be safe.

Curious. Why do you say that, because the HI waves are so big they will kill people and they don't want newbs doing that everyday? Or because locals will retaliate?

paddling out to a popular break in HI is the equivalent of going to the south side of Chicago in the middle of the summer and thinking you are going to play basketball on a bball court with the locals there.
not gonna happen.
Go to surfline and read the part about the localism at each break.

8824, and that right there is why I don't like surfers. Eff them and "their" spot. If I want to go out there and ride, then I'm going to.

It is the same feeling most wakeboarders have for tubers and waterlice.

Very true.
boardordie,
If you really take the time to understand what the US has done to Hawaiian people you would understand their hatred for us.
The CA surfers are a different story. Only so many waves and too many people. Plus inexperienced surfers can seriously hurt other surfers while trying to surf breaks above their ability.
where is K-DUB? He is one of those guys that will kick your ass!

Rocko, me too! that's why I hired a local to take me out.
It was nice not to worry about getting my ass kicked.
Maui was sketchy though. Some serious meth heads out there that hate haole's.

I personally agree with you.
However in terms of surfing this is very true

That I can totally understand. But territorial BS just pisses me off.
It would be fun to come out and kiteboard on their waves, every time they try and come after you, pull the kite, and go airborne.

There was a chick on here a while ago that lived in HI. She spawned a child and never really posted after that (I think). I forget her name though...

8824, yeah I had a local take me out too. The break we went to there were some locals there that weren't happy we didn't use them as an instructors but they left us alone. I was just saying the waves were small compared to North shore.

eeven73, i agree and i think its completley fair. there are certain places for people to surf in hawaii and be safe and not get ther a$$ handed to them. Just like on the lake, we are out on the lake during the week when no one else is, but now and then there are some idiot tubers or hot lappers. my point is we stay out of their way on the weekends they should do the same on the week days. just my .02. im sure no1 cares though haha

It's funny this thread came up...I was just watching some video on surfline, thinking I should say f it, sell everything, quit my job and move out to Hawaii.
I wonder how long it would take me to get rid of everything.

What happened after his first year it got better or he left?
I don't know how these population statistics add up to 100%, but Asians are more affluent than whites, are they considered Haoles too?
Wikipedia statistics:
2005 (total population)
White 41.26%
Black 3.33%
American Indian 2.03%
Asian 57.53%
Native Hawaiian 22.10%

He stuck it out. Still living there, but there were some funky stories I heard.
I would like to move there too. I loved Oahu.

8824, how did I get brought up in this?
Santa Cruz I would say could be a close second behind Hawaii in terms of localized Surf Spots though. Some spots there are a big No-No if you did not grow up surfing them. Or, don't know the guys that keep them on lock down.
Stockton Ave. for example.
I have seen some crazy chit go down in the parking spots over looking that break on the cliff, just because someone was just checking out the place with boards on top of their car. Got chased out of there in a big hurry with a few dents in the side of the ride.
Seen many fights on the beach over the years that I lived there, all over town. "Valleys" "Slugs" or "Trannies" as they call them, getting their asses beat. Not just at a particular break, either. Crazy F'ers over there.

Anywhere there is a wave! Just hire a local to make sure it's not nicknamed shark's bay or tiger cove!
