Here is my problem. My computer at home can not connect to the internet.
I have called Time Warner and have gone through all the shutting off the modem, plug it back in ect.
I had an error when I try to "repair" my connection. It was unable to Clear the NetBT. I have fixed that problem, and last night my internet worked.
I woke up this morning with the same problem of my IE not being able to access the internet (I get the page is not available screen) I can "repair" the connection with the control panel, but it does not function...
Why can't my computer, even though it is plugged into the cable modem, connect to the internet?? It's very frustrating because I don't use P2P or anything, just the web browser. |

Could be a number of things. Not a whole lot of info provided
Does your network adapter say 'disconnected' or 'connected' or 'limited connectivity'?
If its connected, the first thing to do is check your IP address and see what it is pulling.
Go to start>run, type cmd and hit enter.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig and hit enter.
See what your IP address is.
If it is a 0.0.0.0 address, or media disconnected, you more than likely have a hardware or wiring problem.
If it is a normal address like 192.168.x.x, then you are talking to your modem/router and it may be a problem with your internet service provider. A good way to test this is to see how far you can get out by running a Trace Route. Pull up your command prompt again, type tracert 80 www.google.com and hit enter. This will run a trace route to Google over port 80 which is regular internet traffic. You want to see where it stops responding. If it gets all the way to google and says 'trace complete', then your problem is with Internet Explorer itself. If it stops short, that shows where the failure is occurring.
If it is a 169.x.x.x address, you may have a corrupt TCP/IP stack and you will need to look up 'winsock repair' on google. This is a relatively common Windows XP glitch.
This is just a few things that come to mind. Tough to guess exactly.

If you get a 0.0.0.0 or "media disconnected", I'd likely restart and try it again before moving on to any further troubleshooting steps. _________________

| If the story is true then a woman ate the first apple... so I'd say they're both definitely linked to evil. |

I'm running XP, it says in the network box that I am connected to the internet.
I have seen fixes about winsock repair. Which is the best one? |

| Porterwake, the settings can be different depending on your provider... I would call them up again and ask what all your network cards settings and stuff should be to rule that out. |

You would only need to do a winsock repair if your network adapter shows limited connectivity and you have a loopback address of 169.x.x.x. That means TCP/IP jacked up and cannot pull an IP address (DHCP).
What is your current IP address? |

We did not eat the 1st bite.... you did.
We just asked if you wanted to "bite my apple". No one said you had to. |

Surfboard...
Just a normal Ethernet Cord...
No router...
New news:
I ran a winsock fix, now here's where things go bad. My AOL instant messenger works, and some online computer games work (continuum). Internet Explorer and MSN still can not connect to websites. What is the deal with the Microsoft software? |

Sounds like a DNS issue - can you ping an IP address? If so can you also ping a name like www.google.com? _________________ If you do not like your job, you don't strike....You just go in there everyday and do it really half a$$ed.....Now that's the American way - Homer Simpson. |

I can ping them both. I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and still have nothing. It's very frustrating right now.
The connection screen still says I am connected, and I was talking to people on AIM earlier today at home. |

If you can get to some places on the internet and not others, it definitely sounds more like a DNS routing problem through your internet service provider.
Try a trace route. Open your command prompt and type tracert 80 www.google.com and see if the trace completes.
You may also want to try an IP release/renew. A simple reboot can retain your DHCP settings which could retain an invalid DNS server. To do this, open your command prompt and type ipconfig /release, wait until you have 0.0.0.0, then do an ipconfig /renew.
Also- have you install any antivirus of firewall apps, namely anything Symantec? |

Yes, Symantec Antivirus is on my computer.
The WinsockXP fix does all that stuff for me. The IP set and such. I think it is definatly a DNS problem. |

Can you connect to google via it's ip address?
http://64.233.187.99
if so, you have a DNS issue
if not, you got some other problem _________________ Alright. It's Saturday night. I have no date, a two liter bottle of Shasta and my all rush mix tape. Let’s rock! |

if it's sporadic your isp could have a bad DNS server, highly unlikely... but possible
you could always use openDNS as a DNS provider if your DNS is flaky
