Here is a super in depth article that a former coworker sent me comparing the design of the F-22 and the F-35.

Basically, the F-22 was completely designed for air superiority, and the F-35 was initially designed to replace aircraft like the F-16. However, since the F-22 is not going to be exported (as of right now) all of the customers involved in the JSF program want to add in several of the features of the F-22 into the F-35. A lot of that can't happen because of the initial design limitations of the aircraft.

It's interesting to see how the F-35 stacks up with it's original design intent, as opposed to what the customers are expecting out of it now.

What about the history of ALPA/unions in the airline industry. Might be kind of dry but plenty of information to reference.

I had a high speed line in October which was beautiful. Took the last flight out and the first flight back - done at 8 am and didn't have to report back until 7 pm so I had all day off to do whatever. I've been on reserve excluding the high speed line since July. Back on reserve again in December. I'm thinking I'll get a high speed again in Jan since they just put two classes through. Reserve is getting old Laughing

Brad R, my business partner used to fly for Chatauqua (sp). He lived in Midland, TX and was first based out of Buffalo, NY. He spent a lot of time commuting to NY just to sit on reserve. I guess it will all be worth it once you get a mainline job.

Brad R, they did, but there was a lot of seniority there. When he left the airlines he was the most senior F.O. based in St. Louis. He was about to upgrade to captain, but had a good offer to fly corporate out of Midland and didn't want to start over on reserve.

Brad R, his parents have been in the oil business for 25 years or so. In December of '07, he was about to upgrade to captain and knew he would be on reserve for quite a while. At the same time, he got an offer from an oil company to fly their Kingair out of Midland for close to 6 figures. They fly 12 days a month at most and are home just about every night, so he took the job. He and I had started a company in October of '07 solely to drill a couple of shallow oil wells on some minerals his dad held. When he began flying out of Midland, he started looking for other things to keep him busy and my dad gave us a mineral lease to drill for ourselves. In the process of putting those deals together, he met more investors and more people with prospects asking us to drill and operate them. Mostly just a snowball effect got us to where we are right now. In July, we got very busy and he quit flying altogether for a few months. In the past few weeks, things have slowed down and he does some contract flying as there are quite a few Kingair owners here without full-time pilots.

I think when flying became a job for him it lost its appeal. He has a Piper Comanche that hasn't been out of the hangar since I begged him to take me up in August.

I've been on the line since July and I can see where he is coming from because since it has become a job it has definitely lost it appeal. I'll be on reserve for a while and I might make 18k this year. I've been sitting here at the airport since 6 tonight on ready reserve and I'm here until midnight or until the last plane leaves, and now there is weather and maintenance issues so I will probably be called out.

He's got the right idea though - keep flying for fun and work in the oil industry.

Passed my multi private checkride last Friday. I'm trying to have my multi comm done by the end of March.

I thought about getting a pilot liscense but I am worried about safety. Every other week someone is wrecking one of these in Houston area and most times they results are not good. Then pilots I talk to say the most dangerous thing about flying is driving to the airport. What are your views?

vette74, Those pilots you have talked to are correct. Flying is safe unless you are thinking of entering the Reno Air Races or something.

Well I don't know the reason why those went down and how many wrecks there are, but there is a saying: “there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots.”

Pretty much what Mojo said, something like 70% of all crashes are caused by pilot error. Flying is easy, most of your training is what you do when things go wrong. Learn your procedures and follow them every time, every flight and chances are you'll be fine. Or you could just sit on the sofa and stay safe..... as long as a hurricane doesn't come through or a volcano erupts Laughing

about the same odds as crashing a plane.

MojoPin, everything you stated is what I was going to say.

As ridininmd said, most crashes are pilot error. It's actually probably more than 70%, and a high majority of that is stalling on approach to landing...always ahve to pay attention 100%.

I'm starting my X/C's on Monday, and am flying out of Republic/Farmingdale NY (KFRG), just east of NYC. Hope to be done in a month! I started and stopped flying lessons several times over the past 12 years, so I've got 70 hours and still no PPL but am damn close. Going to finish it this time...

ridininmd, everything is done except for 1.1 hours of instrument time and all of my night flying, which is going to be done within the next 5 or so days. My instructor scheduled me to get my checkride sometime late next week or next weekend. I'm heading back down to Daytona the night of the 17th and I want to get everything finished already.

holdsworth, thanks, it's going well! Spent 1.7hrs on foggles today tracking VORs, doing simulated IMC stalls, unusual attitudes and stuff. I'm mentally tired after all of that.

Pretty scary with the mid-air crash here on Saturday...everyone's pretty shaken up. I've flown in that actual helicopter several times, and probably spent 20hrs in aircraft flying that corridor. I met the pilot in the Liberty Helicopters hangar last year. It's a pretty small world, and very scary when things happen in your own backyard, so to speak.

Mike Isler, tracking VORs sucks, it took me a while before I really got it. But 1.7 hours of sim instrument time? Laughing

man wait till you go for your instrument rating, I actually forgot the plane had windows for a while. But it's totally worth it the first time you bust through clouds and break out to VFR on top.
