ok ok, now this is anything like a Gulfstream post or anything like that. i just wanted to hear who all the pilots on the site are and see some pics of your toys. my dad's a pilot and i am on my way to becoming one. he's got 2 other partners on his plane, a 1969 cessna C182 (if i can get a pic, i'll upload a it). he bought a plane for me over christmas to learn in. i'm going to put a few hundred hours on it, spruce up the interior and whatever needs done outside, and sell it for a little bit more. it's a 1969 cessna 150J. here's a pic.

ohio_wake_2008, sweet your dad bought you a plane. Spoiled motherf*cker. Yes, I am jealous.
My dad bought me a baseball glove once.

I took ground school in college and have some "unofficial" hours with my dad. Then after 30 some years in fixed wing he got the hellicopter bug. I DO NOT touch the controls on that thing! (I do, however, waterballoon bomb the neighbors. )

About 400 hours now. Love every minute I'm in the air no matter what. Flown up to a King Air and some time in a 130 sim, but that's it. Bunch of SEL stuff besides that. I haven't been out hardly at all since the move back to TX, but I'm going to go fly my buddies Steerman in the next few weeks. Will hopefully get some time in a Sirrus in the next few months as well...
Good luck with your PPL. What are your career plans? Airlines, Private or Freight?

oshensurfer, careful with that stearman. my dad's friend has one of those and says that you have to fly that plane from the instant you turn it on and all the way back to the hangar, have fun with it though.
my future plans are far, far away from airlines. i'm going into aeronautical engineering and want to work on general aviation planes (designing and such). lately, however, i've been looking toward stuff at lockheed-martin. with all that the military demands and "needs" i think that's where the money is. on my own though, i want to get into aerobatics, fly airshows, and once i have the ability to do it, i REALLY want to fly in the Red Bull Air Races. that stuff is insane but i love going low, fast, and upside down
Rocko it's not that i'm spoiled, i'm just the baby of the family hahaha. but no, my dad bought that for it to be cheaper for me to get my private, and once i do that, get a few hundred hours on it, and work on the interior a little bit, we're going to sell it for a few thousand more. it's an investment more than anything.

oshensurfer, i love rv's
my dad's other friend has a realllllly nice rv-4. he's old, retired, and rich and used to do airshows and such, so he is always spending $20,000 at a time to make his plane go faster and faster. i forget how fast it will go now with all of the add-ons, but it's sweet. my dad's oooother friend (who lives next to RV man) is going to be starting work on a harmon rocket hopefully sometime soon. he's still got a job, so not too much time for the rocket. he does have a nice citabria though.
also, RV man had a nice ultimate kit plane. he hated it because the stall speed on it was 100 KTS (only a 16 ft wingspan), but here is the final result after selling it...check out all of the images of the plane below the picture shown in the article.

Nick Taylor, we actually got a really good deal on my plane. bought it for $20,000. if you aren't going to buy, here's the costs of everything. these are estimates sorta based on the local airport
plane rental: 80-95/hr
instructor: 25-40/hr
gas: ~$3.31/gal
insurance: no idea
you need a minimun of 40 hours to get your license, at least 20 of those with an instructor.
there's a lot of factors involved if you want to buy your own plane to learn in. if you want some information, PM me and i'll try my best to help you out.

ohio_wake_2008, Nobody gets their PPL with 40 hours. Expect 65-85, depending on your training schedule and how well you pick up the skills.
If you rent and go to a flight school (not independent instructor). Expect $8500+ if you're working and training.
If you're straight training and want to go through getting your instrument, I recommend going to these guys.

Here's a picture of me coming in for a landing. Mines nice, but the fuel is so damn expensive.
Seriously though, tball, that's sick. I kind of wished I had followed in my dad's footsteps on this topic. He was an OH-6 Loach pilot. I love that helicoper, so small and nimble.
not my pic

I'm right there w/ you haugy and tball. My dad was a Huey pilot (2 tours in Vietnam, one as a gunship, one as MedEvac - a MILLION good stories) and when I was little, the heliport was right across the street from my babysitter. Pops was one of the higher ups there and he led our tour when we went on a field trip w/ my kindergarten class. I couldn't have been more proud! I'd really like to get my pilots license and a helicopter someday. That's why I play the lottery!
Those OH-6s are just badass! Always thought they were cool helos.

oshensurfer, I could actually get away with 40 hours. I was just stating the minimun required though. I've flown my entire life with my dad and he's tought me how to do most of everything. Standard rate turns keeping altitude, steep banks keeping altitude, stalls, slow flying, take-offs and landings, and the rest of the basics except for spins. He's also tought me how to fly IFR but I don't plan on getting my IFR rating for a while. Another thing that helped me with basic flying knowledge is the Sporty's complete private pilot course. Those DVD's helped me a ton with everything there is.

ohio_wake_2008, Post back when after you take your practical with your hours. This is not a dig on you, but IMHO, a CFI is not covering everything effectively if you're finishing in 40 hours, which is why most people are 60-80+ hours. Especially if you're following a practical syllabus as required under 141. Whether you know the stuff or not and no matter which reg you get licensed under, A CFI has an obligation to teach it and be satisfied with your performance according to the regs (Part 61). I can see a fast learner like yourself at 50-60 ( I think I was 58 ), but not 40 or 35 (part 141). I just don't think one can cover everything and be tested effectively by a CFI, obtain your solo time, night flying (if you want that priviledge) and XC in that amount of time.
Let us know how it goes and good luck.

I understand where you're coming from with all of that. I do want to fly at night and do cross country...I'm going for my private for sure, not recreational. I do want to do a little traveling in my spare time. Now, are these hours all with an instructor or with instructor AND my own solo time...? I think my own solo time is going to be fairly high (for all the longer I will be a student pilot) because everyday, all I want to do is go fly.

ohio_wake_2008, Solo + Dual. That's what I did. It's hard to fly XC and have it be exact anyway. I flew out to Santa Cruz and up and down the coast and Napa for mine, so obviously, I didn't worry about hitting precisely 10 hours of XC.
It's all about knowing your stuff and being safe. The more hours you accumulate the more air awareness you have for handling unusual situations or emergencies.

oshensurfer, you ever listen to the radio show on 1530 on Sunday mornings? It's all general aviation, scuba diving, offshore fishing. I listen to it every Sunday on my way to go pick up Alexa. I know nothing about any of those (a little about offshore fishing, but that's rarely discussed), but it's a great show regardless. 10-12, I think.

It's funny you posted this because I actually just got back from talking to two of the head guys at Pinnacle about a job. I'm going out to Denver in March for CAE CRJ school and they said after that I have a job in April/May so I'm pumped. I have been flying since '02 and have 550 hours.
